WLAN service best practices

Are there any best practices for WLAN service settings? Similar to the AP radio best practices, but for things like Flexible Client Access, 11k (including Beacon Report, Quiet IE), opportunistic keying/preauth etc. In the past I've turned some of these off while debugging other problems, but I can't remember why or if I should turn them back on.

The 11K Beacon Report/Quiet IE is a useful setting to support potential roaming options for your clients. Please use the below GTAC article. https://gtacknowledge.extremenetworks.com/articles/Q_A/What-is-the-Nearby-AP-Report

However, I believe that there is a known issue with this setting causing some issues with VoIP phones in the latest codes. 

I would recommend that you not enable these settings unless specifically instructed by TAC.

"Flexible Client Access" : find the below that help the wireless client to propagate better in a given spectrum

1.802.11k and 802.11h  [Please contact GTAC/Refer the release notes before enabling]

  802.11k is a AP assisted roaming,it defines Radio Resource Measurement[RRM],that helps the     wireless clients understand its wireless environment and roam potentially.
 
Both AP and client must support 802.11k amendment,below is the data exchanged in Beacon,Association request/response followed by Action frames [Refer screen shot 1]

  Transmit power control (TPC)
  Client statistics          :  SNR,signal strength & data rates are updated to AP
  Channel statistics      :   Channel noise and load information is updated to AP which helps controller in channel management decision

  Roaming site reports :  Mobile Assisted Hand-Over,enhances digital and cellular phone to makes best roaming decison [VOIP-traffic better handled]

  Client stations keep a table of “known access points” and make decisions on when to roam.
2.Opportunistic keying[OKC] or Preauthentication : OKC is prefered over preauthentication
 
  Since the EAP Authencation process takes time (vary ~100ms -700ms) applications (like voice),this is not ideal for client-roaming

  Opportunistic key caching (OKC) reduces the time needed for authentication.

  When OKC is used, multiple APs can share Pairwise Master Keys (PMKs) among themselves and the station can roam to a new AP that has not visited before,besides reuse PMKID
  that was established with the current AP.

  OKC allows the station to roam quickly avoiding complete authentication,performing only 4-way Key exchange at the end.

It is highly recommended to contact GTAC before enabling any of the above.

Honestly, every environment is so different.  Experimenting is the best way to find out.  Most of the settings are easy to change, so making small changes and then observing for a few days, will go a LONG way to figuring out what features are helping and what ones are hurting.

However, I cannot suggest turning on 802.11k.  It causes all of our APs to reboot with a kernel panic "Out of cookies" running 10.11.4.8.  But again, maybe that is just our environment... so testing is the best way to find out.  Unfortunately, there is no silver bullet, I wish there was... trust me :).

Also, as stated, GTAC can provide more insight on why you might what to consider turning on or turning off some settings.

Hi Jeremy,

in last V10.11.05 Release Notes are these issue fixed:
wns0016413: Improved reliability of 4-way handshake in congested environments which could affect sensitive clients

This solves maybe your hurt with 802.11k.

Otherwise do you open a GTAC Case already?
If not i encourage you to do that!
This will help you and all other extreme networks users ...
