Extended wireless reports

Userlevel 4
I'm still missing historical data of important wireless metrics like channel utilization per ap/channel and historical data for other statistics you could view in the EWC reports like "Wireless Statistics by APs" and "AP Performance Report by Radio". A historical report of channel utilization could help you to find out were you have or are close to wireless performance problem or maybe a non-WiFi interference source exists.

I've tried to create my own custom report in OneView, but i could not found the values I'am looking for. Hopefully next version of Extreme Control Center add more usefull features to the Wireless Tab making admins lifes more easy. Compared to competitor WNMS many things are still missing.

If I'm wrong, please tell me how can view the things I'am looking for.

Best Regards
Hartmut

Harmut, Can you see if the bandwidth data is missing from the controller summary?

It may be this problem as described in KCS. Where the CLI credentials and SNMPV3 is not enabled.

I don't mean client bandwidth. "Channel Util" is a layer 1 metric. I need historical data form this controller report viewable per ap/radio:

I've been told by GTAC that a lot of those snmptraps listed in the oneview reports are not enabled for typical collection. I was told that the ap channel utilization trap is only collected for VENUES. Not sure what "VENUES" means exactly.

If you go to oneview>administration>diagnostics (change the level to diagnostics in the top left)>historical statistics collector>statistics collection targets

Then filter the Type column for "AP", you will see all the ap's that netsight has collected data from. select an Active entry and show details. You will see all of the stats that oneview is collecting for that device. On my AP's, it is only collection 14 traps, even though there are so many more listed in the oneview reports.

This is been a major let down for me, as i haven't been able to report on things like historical channel utilization and DCS noise, even though the traps are available.

Thanks for your answer. Hopefully Extreme makes it easier to access this data for all customers.

Add me to the list of being interested in being able to look at the channel utilization over time. It would certainly help trouble shoot or give you starting point. Many times when problems are reported it is well after and being able to look at channel utilization would be valuable.

If you download an AP report, the dcs file contains historical channel utilisation, or if you log in over SSH, it's /proc/dcs. Another totally undocumented way is if you get a shell on the controller and then use /var/controller/debug/cm/shmstatstest ap_channel_snmp_report which will give you the current data that you could then graph.

Hello James, thanks for your reply. I will try this, but its only a "hack" not a customer friendly solution.

I know you could do several interesting stuff at the CLI/linux busybox. With knowledge of the filesystem I've placed a picture in the guest portal voucher, also a hack, but many customer ask for it. The downside is not update save. Solutions like this are cool for "geeky" wireless guys or admins, but customers like easy useable solutions.

Hopefully Extreme listen more to customer requirements and the feedback from the Systems Engineers working in with there production in real world scenarios. Channel utilization history is one important feature every vendor should implement in there NMS/WNMS. Its not nice to have, its a must have in my opinion.

Kind Regards
Hartmut

Hi Hartmut.
We are testing EMC (Netsight Suite 8.0.3.53) and still I can't find any information of Channel utilization of an AP. Could you resolve your problem meanwhile?

Regards,
Thomas.

So https://community.extremenetworks.com/extreme/topics/extremewireless-support-in-librenms includes a graph for channel utilisation. It uses data from SNMP which I guess goes via the script I found above. There are a lot of stats available in the MIBs, let me know if you find more that would be useful to graph, they're pretty easy to add support for in LibreNMS.

Hi James.
First of all I want to thank you for this wonderful work for merging the EWC to LibreNMS. I started with with LibreNMS a month ago and I didn't expect to get so much useful information about EWC. Great work!! I am disappointed that Extreme Mangement Centre (EMC) version 8.03 doesn't provide any information about channel utilization, data which is very important for me as a network administrator. I like very much LibeNMS, the only thing I wish it could provide is offering a list of clients connected to an AP with their MAC addresses and not only the number of connected clients.
With best regards,
Thomas.

LibreNMS does have ARP and FDB tables (I'm not sure which would be more appropriate) that could be populated from 1.3.6.1.4.1.4329.15.3.6.2 (muTable), but it's not something I've looked at. There's also talk of being able to view all the data from a single AP vs it being split over many pages organised by the controller but no code has been written for this yet.

Ok, I will look into it. But first I have to find a way to get an alert when channel utilisation is too high on our APs 3805i.
Thanks James. Have a good one.

Hello Thomas,
sorry for the late reply. If have still no solution fully integrated in EMC. I am really unhappy, too. This is rely bad compared to other NMS/WMS solutions.

I like to add some new questions to the topic. Some weeks ago at to study the OneView configuration more deeply. I noticed a the configuration menu for the "SNMP summaries" and found entries there for collection some data I'm interested. Compare with the appended screenshot:

I've tried to enable polling of this data, but my OneView still do not collect this data. Would be great to made this work, but this would also require wireless reports showing this data or a more flexible way to create custom reports.

Everyone here have this working?

Which traps did you try to enable, and how did you try to enable them? I was under the impression that you cannot modify the traps which are being collected by OneView.

I put in feature requests for things like historical channel utilization and DCS within Oneview and a little birdie has recently told me that they might be implementing it in the near future.

In regards to.. "I've been told by GTAC that a lot of those snmptraps listed in the oneview reports are not enabled for typical collection. I was told that the ap channel utilization trap is only collected for VENUES. Not sure what "VENUES" means exactly."

With the NMS-ADV license you'd access ExtremeConnect in EMC which allows to enable different APIs to systems - one of them is venue reports.

From what I'd see it's a report that you create for a certain timeframe (= the event) and is then listed in the Report section - but I don't see any layer#1 information...
