WLAN AP: Defining AP-Name within CLI Prompt

Userlevel 6
Because i am working for deeper troubleshooting directly on AP CLI, I am looking for a way how to see/set the AP-Name within CLI Prompt.

(Working with IdentiFi WLAN)

Here my solution (with help of my collegue):
PS1="'grep -i apname /home/config/current.cfg | cut -b 13-' # "
To make it persistant after reboot (but maybe not after update):
echo 'PS1="'grep -i apname /home/config/current.cfg | cut -b 13-' # "' >> ~/.profile
Hopefully anybody else needs this too!

Mathias, what AP models does the above apply to?

I test with an AP3715e - but i am sure this will work with all IdentiFi APs.

I just tested this with a 3825i and it worked just dandy.

Thanks for creating this KB Article ...

Is it possible to push my FR 1307523, that it will be available for all customers without doing it manually ?

Matthias,
98% our customer never use the AP-shell,
we understand that request is nice and we will look to it.
at the end, the AP name can be seen in the config or the cmd,

# cget config |grep apName
apName Berlin-Demo_AP_3825i
#

so the prio from that FR will stay as standard prio.

It's easy to get a CR thru...

There is only one question asked... how much more X will you sell with this function.
Correct answer: hardware for 100 Million Euros
Result: CR approved 🙂

You have my vote for the CR - I think it's a great improvement.

BTW, I've tried reboot, factory reset, rename the AP via GUI and the "improved" AP CLI command prompt still worked.

Great work !!!!

Cheers,
Ron

I hope the CR get's a higher prio on the list if 2 Extreme Embassadors support the idea.

I like the idea of showing the AP name in the prompt as well.

This can be easily implemented by Extreme in the /etc/profile file and the commands from the first post.

Overriding the system default for the prompt (which is fallback to Busybox default of unset PS1) using $HOME/.profile is appropriate for customer (or partner) implemented configuration changes on the AP.

This was a great little hack Matthias. Glad to see it made it's way into the product release chain.
