Why are my clients no getting DHCP addresses

I have created a network policy on the HiveManager NG cloud, but my clients are not getting DHCP addresses. I tried to do the VLAN Probe and it says my VLAN's are not available.  Please help. I tried checking all layers. I can connect to the AP via ssh and can ping other networks from the AP, but my clients aint getting DHCP ips

If VLAN probe is showing the VLANs are unavailable, that means that either the DHCP scopes are not setup/enabled or that there is a network infrastructure configuration problem. Assuming that the DHCP scopes are setup and configured correctly, let's look at the network infrastructure. The most likely issue is that the port on the switch that the AP is plugged into is not tagged for the VLANs that you need. Check the configuration of the switch port that the AP is on and make sure that it has the VLAN tags for the appropriate VLANs.

Hi Thabiso,

I can agree with Bill, that the next place to look would be the Switch-Port that the AP is connected to, after confirming that the DHCP Scope is correct at the Server, and that all Ports between the DHCP Server and AP are allowing the correct vLAN Tags.

Additionally, If the User-Profile and vLAN assignment was created in Hivemanager, but an Update was not pushed to the APs, the clients may still be getting assigned default vLAN attributes.

I believe that the DHCP Scope is working fine, I have double checked this morning. Below is my config on the port that the AP is connected.

Port: Gi1/0/1

VLAN Membership Mode: General Mode

Access Mode VLAN: 1 (default)

General Mode PVID: 63

General Mode Ingress Filtering: Enabled

General Mode Acceptable Frame Type: Admit All

General Mode Dynamically Added VLANs:

General Mode Untagged VLANs: 63

General Mode Tagged VLANs: 340,350

General Mode Forbidden VLANs:

Trunking Mode Native VLAN: 1 (default)

Trunking Mode Native VLAN Tagging: Disabled

Trunking Mode VLANs Enabled: All

Private VLAN Host Association: none

Private VLAN Mapping:

Private VLAN Operational Bindings:

Default Priority: 0

Protected: Disabled

~ The User-Profile and VLAN were pushed to the client aswell.

Can you tell me what the Native and Management vLAN assignments are for the Network Policy?

Based on that Switch Configuration:

General Mode PVID: 63 | This is what Aerohive refers to as Native

General Mode Tagged VLANs: These should be User-Profile assosciated VLANs and the Aerohive Management VLAN.

@David Souri the Native vlan is Vlan 63 and Management vLAN is Vlan 63 as well.

Could you go to the CLI of the AP with a Terminal Client like Putty(Windows) or OpenSSH admin@ip-of-AP

Please try this command:

int mgt0 dhcp-probe vlan-range 340 340

Then, this command as well:

int mgt0 dhcp-probe vlan-range 350 350

They Should Pass If all is tagged up-stream and DHCP is properly configured.

If Not, we can continue Triage:

So far, you've confirmed the Switch-Port that the AP is connecting to Tags correctly.

Can you check the same for any UP-stream switch?
Including the Switch-Port that the DHCP Server is connected to.

Are you using vLAN 340 or 350 for the User-Profiles, or both?

If so, then the DHCP Probe commands above should have passed but if they fail, We'll want to locate where the drop is.

Please perform a Client Monitor with the MAC Address of the client device that's failing. We will want to determine which part of the DHCP Handshake is failing, OR if the problem is Radio Association.

Hi @David Souri , I checked the up-stream and found out that the route to Vlan 340 was omitted on the core switch. Upon adding it I could probe the Vlan340 successfully. I cant test if clients are getting DHCP addresses as users are not at the office at the moment. I will check in the morning and see if they are able to.

The Vlan350 will be used for the Guest-Access, I am not worried that much about it at the moment.

Good day, My apologies for disappearing on you guys, had issues with Aerohive licenses. Am back to square one. I can't probe VLAN 340, as a results my clients are not getting any ip addresses. You assistance will be much appreciated.

Thabiso,

One thing to note w/wireless is that it operates at Layer 2 (MAC layer) predominantly. So if Layer 3 (IP) isn't working, it's most likely a configuration issues elsewhere upstream (could be the Aerohive configuration or your switch configuration). Not knowing how all of that is setup makes triage difficult. You mentioned in earlier posts that VLAN 340 was omitted from your core switch. Did that switch config not get saved perhaps and the switch lost power and lost the config that got it working?

Your best route it to start w/Davids troubleshooting steps from before to try to nail down where the issue lies.

From the switch the AP is plugged into, can you ping the DHCP server? Do other VLANs work? What IP/VLAN is the AP itself on? If you put the User Profile for the SSID on that VLAN, will clients get an IP from that DHCP bucket?

@Brian Powers I can ping the radius server from the switch, The AP is on the management VLAN which is VLAN 63. So u suggest I put the user profile on the same VLAN as the AP?

That would/should confirm that the issue be a configuration issue related to VLAN 340. And give you a starting point to troubleshooting. If clients can get an IP on VLAN 63 as well that is.

You state you can ping the radius server, did you mean the DHCP server? Or do both services run on the same server?

The DHCP and Radius servers are separate. I can ping both from the switch. Let me try to put profile on VLAN 63 and see if I will get something.

Good day, the clients obtained DHCP addresses from VLAN 63. I had to go through the entire switch config and found out that the ip helper statement was ommited. I think the configs were not saved and we had power outages. I can succesfully probe VLAN 340. Will be testing if client can get ip addresses.
