topic AP122 bottleneck? in Aerohive Migrated Content

Hi,

I'm currently testing at home with an AP122 using Hivemanger Connect. I have some previous familiarity with Aerohive products and HIvemanger. I have a 300Mbps down connection and home and when connected to my standard wireless router I typically average between 280-290 Mbps down. While testing with the AP122, I originally was topping out at around 150Mbps, but have gotten this up to 200Mbps by adjusting the 5Ghz channel width from 20Mhz to 80Mhz. I'm wondering if there's anything else that I'm missing that is preventing me from reaching higher speeds. The Aerohive access point is in the same room that I'm testing from while the router is downstairs and I'm still pulling faster speeds from the router. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

There are some settings that could effect your speed, as well as the possibility of interference. If you could send me tech data from the AP, I can take a look and let you know what I see. If you'd like to send that to me directly, my email is communityhelp@aerohive.com.

This guide reviews how to get tech data from the CLI of an AP: https://thehivecommunity.aerohive.com/s/article/Collecting-Tech-Data-via-CLI

Hi Brandon,

I had the same questions concerning the same AP122 time before: https://thehivecommunity.aerohive.com/s/question/0D50c00006baMHMCA2/ap122-slow-txrx-data-rate?language=en_US

Hope it helps

Thanks for linking to this. Quite frankly it's a very disappointing answer from Aerohive support.

It bothers me that the defacto answer always seems to be interference. While I can understand that in business environment with multiple WAPS this may be a common occurrence, I'm literally testing in a house with 1 access point, 1 user, and 1 device in the same room. If I'm already seeings a bottleneck at this point, I can't imagine what would happen if 5+ users were connected.

Furthermore, the MCS index charts one of the tech's referenced and claims shows 200Mbps is what you should be getting is incorrect. With an 80Mhz channel width/2 spatial streams/256-QAM the theoretical max would be 867Mbps. Even if you want to cut that number by 50% you'd still be looking at over 400Mbps. Cut it even further by 75% and you'd still be getting more than 200Mbps.

I'm not trying to be argumentative or insulting. I just kind of feel deceived by what's advertised and the actual performance of the device. This is also making me wary about using Aerohive WAP's for some large wireless projects we have coming up. I had one of my coworker's with a gigabit connection take this home to test in his environment and he reported the same results. I'm more than willing to take this back home, generate the reports and provide to support. Just hoping there's an actual resolution to this.

I totally agree with you.

In fact, the bottleneck I discovered when discussing the issue with support, was that the CPU load rised to almost 100% when I downloaded big-sized files from a local network storage. Also, CPU rised to almost 100% when performing iPerfs test from one PC to another through the AP.

To sum up, AP122 CPU is what it is, however, connection stability is really good in my opinion.

I'm very sorry to hear you're disappointed with our support, I hope we can do better for you in the future. Just to clarify my response on this post, there are other things I was going to check in the tech data besides interference, the tech data file pulls quite a bit of information. That said, a single AP in a home environment can experience interference from factors such as loud neighboring signals or environmental factors like water, glass, or metal. It absolutely may not be the case in your situation, but without data it's very hard for me to know that.

I would encourage you to open a technical support case so we can collect the data we need and investigate this to your satisfaction, it was not my intention to leave you without an answer here.

Hello everyone

I have the same problem with the ap122, but I do not even exceed 80Mbs (iperf -c ... w1m) The client is a win10 pro surface 5th 2x2: 2 (80MHz) Here below the connection, what did I miss? Thanks in advance.

We would need to see some tech data from an AP122 to begin troubleshooting this with you. If you could please send tech data to me at communityhelp@aerohive.com, I will let you know what I find.
