The Hive Manager is 8.2r2a. The Hive OS that was causing the issue was 6.5r7. I decided to run updates to 6.5r10 just to see what happened and it cleared all of the mesh points and put the APs back to Portal. Not sure why, because I'm not sure that I really understand what Mesh Point means.

Could you tell me which HiveManager platform you are using, and what HiveOS version the APs are running? We have two HiveManager platforms: HiveManager Classic (myhive.aerohive.com) or HiveManager (formerly NG, cloud.aerohive.com).

It is generally a reporting error when we see APs show up as Mesh that are not, I'm glad upgrading the firmware resolved this for you. Mesh is a fail-over process set up in the case of an Aerohive device losing its physical Ethernet connection. It can also be used to provide internet when we cannot run a physical wire to a specific location.
