Typically after you are on 6.5r3 or later, HiveManager will be able to work with the device. Separate from that, when we see users run in to that error when trying to upgrade, we recommend trying the upgrade through either a TFTP flash or the Web UI. A TFTP flash requires a technical support case and a screen sharing session with an Aerohive engineer to complete, but the Web UI is a work around you can do on your side without support.

Firmware updates won't be affected by what password is set on the device. The password you see under global settings gets applied to the AP after it gets a configuration update for the first time. In a default state, the password will either be "Aerohive1" or "aerohive". The HM and AP use different encryption when contacting each other directly, the only time this password comes in to play is when you want to SSH in to the device.

Hi

I have some 2nd user Aerohive AP330’s and Hive Manager appliance. I would like to use these to provide a wireless network for a church ( a registered charity) which is being refurbished to provide support services for homeless people. Our own services to install and support the implementation will be free of charge so I cannot afford to spend much on this. What is the most cost effective route to obtaining updates please?

TIA Stephen.

We have a free version of HiveManager called Connect. This HiveManager version includes firmware updates for you to use. To obtain a Connect HiveManager, please follow this guide- https://thehivecommunity.aerohive.com/s/article/Registering-for-HiveManager-Connect

Does that seem like it would work for your set up? If not, please let me know and we can explore other options.

Hi Sam

That's great. I have registered for connect and added a couple of APs. I have a problem in that when the AP tries to update from 6.1.6r to 6.5r.10 we get the attached error. I have tried rebooting the AP as it suggests. Any ideas gratefully received.

TIA

Stephen.

PS is there a comparion matrix available for the features for each version of Hivemanager please?

You'll need to go to 6.2r1 before you can move up to 6.5r10, there are a few stepwise upgrades in the older firmware versions. I will email you the file you need directly, you will want to navigate to the IP address the AP is currently using in your URL bar at the top of the browser, and then log in with the APs SSH credentials (defaults are either admin/aerohive or admin/Aerohive1, or you can find the password the device is using in Device Management settings under Global Settings). You can upgrade the firmware from here as well, then it will be able to take the next upgrade.

As for a comparison between Connect and Select, this page should cover that- https://aerohive.egnyte.com/dl/nX36CvY9PF

This page has some additional Connect resources you might find useful- https://thehivecommunity.aerohive.com/s/welcome-to-connect

Hi Sam
I was able to apply the upgrade to 6.2r1 that you kindly sent to me through the web console on the AP330. From what you said I thought I would then be able to upgrade to 6.5rx through the cloud Hive Manager. When I try this I get an error saying the Aerohive device was unable to write the image to flash memory. If you know what causes this problem and how to fix it I would be very grateful.
TIA

HiveManager can only work with the newer TLS versions, it does not work well with TLS 1.0/1.1. This means the APs need to be on 6.5r3.0 or later for HiveManager to work with it properly as older HiveOS versions are still using the older TLS versions. You can however jump from 6.2r1 to a later version, you don't have to go stepwise like we did with 6.1r6 to 6.2r1. I'm sorry for the confusion, please let me know if I can clarify anything else.

Hi Sam
That seems tpo be what’s not working. The AP now has 6.2.r1 installed. I did this using the file you kindly sent me. However, even though HiveManager sees this AP has 6.2r1 installed it still complains that the version is too old. Is there anything I need to do through the AP’s cli to enable TLS connectivity before I can use HiveManager to update?
TIA

I'm afraid the best work around for this is to upgrade through the web UI (sorry to keep pointing you back to that). You'd also want to make sure you have TCP 443 and TCP 22 allowing outbound traffic for updates, but if the firewall were blocking us we'd typically see a different error message.

Hi Sam
I did the 6.5.4r upgrade through the web ui and rebooted. I then went to the HM to try and upgrade to 6.5r11 from there and that’s where I now still see the error. Unless I misunderstood you, I thought that now the AP has 6.5r4 installed it should update from HM ok.
One thought, the AP still has the default password of aerohive, could this be a problem as I see on HM you can set a device password under global settings. Is this the password that HM uses when connecting to the AP?
I am really puzzled (sorry).
I have upgraded to 6.5r4 through the AP’s web ui so this works.
However, I now need two things:

1. Upgrade AP to 6.5r11 (which I don’t have)
2. Get the AP manageable through HM
Not sure why even if item 1 above was completed why the AP would then be manageable through HM.
Unfortunately I can't tell you exactly why the HiveManager is having issues with the firmware upgrade at this point, but I can tell you it isn't the same issue we were running in to with the outdated firmware. If you want to have a root cause analysis on why the firmware upgrades are failing now, that would require a technical support case. I can tell you the work around for this, which is to upgrade the firmware manually.
