Since the answer depends a bit on what kind of HiveManager you're setting up, could you tell me if this is for an on premises HiveManager or an online instance?

I am trying to setup a new instance of HiveManager NG to configure so we can migrate all of our devices off of the old HiveManager. Unfortunately I've run into a roadblock in the initial setup process. The page for configuring the SMTP settings requires the username be a valid email address (i.e. username@domain.com). We use AWS for our SMTP service and it does not use a full email address for the username. Has anyone figured out a way to work around this? This seems to be a common situation; not all SMTP servers require a fully qualified email address for the username.

Thanks,

Doug

Thank you for clarifying. I was under the impression you could enter a non-working email at this stage for an on-premises deployment. I'm going to test this in my lab to be sure, I'll let you know how that goes and what our next steps will need to be.

I was able to move past the SMTP setup by simply adding a domain to the end of the username. However, this leads to the next question of how can I make this actually work with out SMTP server which only uses the username, not the domain, for authentication?

We have the same problem. As a consequence it's not possible to create additional (admin) users because Hivemanager wants to send the account information by Email to the new user. So, please submit that feature request, Sam.

I have already submitted a feature request on your behalf, however if you could please open a case with this request and let me know the case numbers, we're going to log this request in an additional way as well to see if we can get more traction.

If you have support, please open a case the usual way. If you do not have support, please email me directly at communityhelp@aerohive.com and we'll discuss the other options we have for getting a case made for you for this issue. Please do remember to send me the case numbers so there is no confusion with technical support as this isn't the usual procedure they follow, we've just been given a one time exception here.

I was just about to raise this issue. Where is the best place for updates on this? There are few issues with authenticated access to HM NG , This thread, radius not working correctly and also not being able to use an email relay without requiring authentication (we use an internal relay).

Should i create a new thread for the email relay issue? I have a case open for the radius problem

Hi all,

A quick summary and a status update:

1) The engineering team should be changing the behaviour so that the SMTP username is not required to be in email address format for the next release.

2) The current design is that authenticated SMTP is currently mandatory, this was an intentional design decision. I am not aware of a plan to change this for the next release.

3) The current design for RADIUS admin authentication is that there is a direct reference to the username configured locally, and therefore a local user has to exist, to use this. I am not aware of a plan to change this for the next release. (There is currently, no means to map a local user to a different RADIUS user.)

4) There is a bug in this RADIUS admin authentication feature where PAP is incorrectly used. The engineering team should be correcting this for the next release.

5) Because use of an SMTP server is required by design for various features in the HiveManager VA to function, it is an intentionally mandatory step to configure an SMTP server when setting up initially. (However, by entering something unused, it is possible to skip past this for lab testing and qualification purposes outside of a production environment.)

I will flag this thread to the appropriate teams so that they are aware of the observations and requests being made here.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,

Nick

Hi,

any news about this problem?

We are testing the virtual appliance (Build Id: 2019-06-03-20.57.17) since this morning and stumbled over this BIG problem with SMTP. 😞

We use a mail server, that needs either

no authentification

or

authentification with only the username, whereas the username have to be without "@domain.tld".

So at the moment the hivemanager VA is not working with our mail server. 😞

I have configured here in this company in the last 7 years about ~ 40 - 50 different types of software and hardware, which all send mails via SMTP. And ALL OF THESE have the option to use SMTP without authentification, which we prefer. Because our mail server is configured to accept SMTP connections without authentification only from trusted IP spaces. That is enough security for us and everything works well.

Didn't your developers look on other software, how it's solved there?

So... how is the status with the "feature request"?

When will this get fixed?

Or do we have to set up a workaround which will cost us ~1/2 of work?

Regards

Hi Thorsten, we have updated our SMTP protocol in the latest HiveManager release to not require an email format for the SMTP user name. Could you try your configuration out on the latest release (19.5.1.7)?

Hi Sam,

yes, we already have this latest release (19.5.1.7). OK, I've checked it again... If I enter in the field "user name" a value without "@domain.tld", the this field is marked red. But nevertheless, it works, when I save the settings. Now we can use all mail based functions (generate new administrative users, send WiFi users their PPSK keys, ...). 

Maybe you should remove this red marking of this field in the next versions. That is very confusing.

Thanks for the fast answer!
