ping drops 3 times when a Radius server to re- authenticate an end device. please explain why. thanks.

Thank you for reaching out, I have a few questions to get a better idea of the scope of the issue.

Are you attempting to ping the Radius server from the AP or a client device?

Do the pings ever get through?

Could you tell me if you have ICMP disabled on your network?

Also, if you go to Configure> Open the network policy in use> Go to Additional Settings> Device data Collection and Monitoring (left hand side menu)> Scroll down to the Automatic Synthetic Traffic Generation> Can you tell me if either option in this section is enabled?

Finally could you tell me what kind of Radius we are using? Is it hosted on the AP or externally on your backend network?

We are using Radius server feature and install radius function on one of the Aerohive switches on site as attached as "Capture-radius.png". Every time an end device is being authenticated, there are two situations we have noticed from the log files. One is if the device is authenticated in 20 seconds there is no ping drops at all. if more than 20 seconds, 3 time ping drops will be seen and also the end device will be dropped from the network as well as attached as "Capture-radius-2.png".

Added the file again. the red part in "Capture-radius-2.png" shows the drops.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by installed the Radius on the Aerohive switch. Would you be able to add me as an external user to your HiveManager so I can look at the set up we have now? If you would like to add me, please use the email slynn@aerohive.com, and let me know what your organization name is (global settings> Account details), and which Network policy I should be looking at if there is more than one.

Radius server is in head office and it uploads to one of Aerihive SR2024 onsite.

Radius servers are authentication servers, which clients would need to authenticate against when connecting to an AP, which would all happen before a switch is involved with the traffic. While I'm sure there is a switch on the backend network, switches do not typically act as Radius servers, so I am trying to clarify what device is hosting the Radius server. I appreciate the screen shot you sent earlier showing the radius servers in your device list, but I can't tell what model device that is from the hostname of the device. Do you have a switch, set to router mode, acting as a Radius server?

I am talking about wired devices now. they are going to APs, am I right?

You can wire devices in to the APs, but more typically wired devices would bypass the APs and go to your switches/routers. Can you tell me what the serial number is for the devices hosting your Radius server?
