Hi,

I have an AP122 running HiveOS 8.4r8.

When I perform speed tests over my local WIFI network (from local server to user PC throug AP122), I only achieve at most 200Mbps.

This data rate are not related with user PC since the test has been done with a windows10 and a MacBook (both users download at 200Mbps at most).

On the other hand, test has been performed at 5GHz intrerface and at a few meters direct line-of-sight from the AP.

iperf results from windows10 as a client and AP122 as a server showed at most 95Mbps of bandwidth.

Moreover, AP122 is configured without any QoS policy (by default, it limits the data rate to 2000Mbps per client).

To finish the exposure, I have run the tests using two different routers (an Arcadyan from my ISP and a Mikrotik rb960) obtaining the same results. Of course, eth interfaces autosensing is set to on and showing 1Gbps.

Results with built-in WIFI ISP router (not using AP122) are about 400Mbps.

Some help will be appreciated.

What is the max throughput available from your ISP? Could you send tech data from the AP 122 so we can take a look and start narrowing things down?

To get tech data using HiveManager (formerly NG, cloud.aerohive.com):

Tools> Utilities> Get tech data> Check the box next to the device> Get tech data (blue button at the top of the page this time).

This guide reviews how to get tech data from the CLI of the AP in case that is more convenient:

https://thehivecommunity.aerohive.com/s/article/Collecting-Tech-Data-via-CLI

Thank you for that data. I am seeing some very heavy interference on the 2.4GHz (78% CRC failures, which means 78% of your 2.4GHz traffic is failing the first time). So that will account for a good deal of slow speeds, at least on the 2.4GHz radio. I'm also seeing quite a few neighbors on the 5GHz radio that are much too loud and are on overlapping channels with your devices. This will also cause traffic speed degradation. I would recommend using 40MHz or 20MHz channel widths instead, to limit the damage from neighboring devices you do not control.

Additionally, we don't recommend using APs as servers in iperf tests, as the APs are busying passing and managing client traffic. The best way to perform an iperf is to hardwire a device that will act as the server, and use a wireless client like a lap top as the iperf client. This will test the speed at which data traverses the AP. Would you be able to re-run the iPerf test?

Could you also tell me what switch the AP is connecting to upstream?

Hi Sam,

I have run iperf from one PC to another PC through the AP. The max data rate that I achieve is about 200Mbps.

The network topology is as follows: the AP is conected to a Mikrotik PoE router. One PC also connected to the router via ethernet and the rest of devices connected through the AP.

As I mentioned at the first message of the post, these results are obtained with this new router and the old one provided by my ISP.

200Mbps is a good wireless speed, what speeds were you hoping to get over the wireless? Also was that for the 5GHz radio or 2.4GHz?

Hi Sam,

I was expecting to achieve 400 to 600mbps since my network has few wireless devices and i perform the tests with only my PC connected to the AP. I'm in the 5GHz radio with a link speed of 780mbps reported by windows

For a two spatial stream device, such as the AP 122 which is a 2X2 device, you would be reaching the maximum wireless speeds already. This MCS chart is a good reference for seeing what speeds are possible within certain numbers of spatial streams: https://www.wlanpros.com/mcs-index-charts/. Your wired speeds and wireless speeds will never match, we can expect at least a 50% drop between wired and wireless speeds, and that is without an interference in the network which is not the case here.

Hi Sergi,

Please can you check the CPU usage as you perform this test via the shell:

show cpu detail

I suspect that this is expected characteristics of the hardware and a key differentiator between what would be observed on the the 2x2 AP122 vs. the higher end 2x2 AP130 in the product line up.

The AP122 and AP130 are both great APs, targeted for different use cases.

Regards,

Nick

@Nick Lowe Indeed, when I download a large file (several GB) at 210Mbps (2 spacial streams @5GHz ), AP122 CPU rises up to 100% (mainly 'Soft interrupt utilization').

However, download speed is really constant.

At the end, very happy to know my hardware limitations and performance since this a really great AP for my domestic purposes with really good performance.

Thank you all for your help!
