Hi,

I have an AP122.

When I stream a 4kUHD movie (Plex server detects that the movie is encoded at 139Mbps) to my TV (the TV is connected at 5GHz band and 1% rx CRC rate according to tech log), the movie has to buffer all the time. Diggin deeper in the issue, it turns out that the AP122 CPU is about 98% when streaming that movie.

This is the log message: 2019-11-19 20:24:36 warn ah_top: CPU rate overload.

The process that uses the 98% of CPU resources is :

3 root RW [ksoftirqd/0]

My question is: is AP122 capable of dealing with that with a proper configuration (this is, reduce the ksoftirqd/0 demands) ? or I have reached a hardware limitation ?

Thank you!

Sorry for the long wait here, thank you for checking in. Would you be able to get tech data from the AP taken when you're streaming and having issues? Also, could you let me know the MAC address of the device you're using when you pull the tech data? If you'd like to send that to me directly, my email is communityhelp@aerohive.com.

Hello ExtremeNetworks Community,

It seems like your AP122 is struggling with the high CPU usage, especially when streaming a 4K UHD movie at such a high bitrate (139Mbps). The AP122's CPU spikes to 98% during streaming, which could be due to insufficient processing power to handle the data throughput, especially over a wireless 5GHz connection. You might want to consider upgrading your access point to a more powerful model or reducing the stream bitrate if possible. On a related note, if you're using want how to change the language on magis tv, you can typically find this option in the settings menu under "Language Preferences."

Best of Luck!!

Hi Sergi,

It sounds like your AP122 might be hitting a hardware limitation. The high CPU usage, especially with the ksoftirqd/0 process, suggests that the access point is struggling to process the network interrupts efficiently while handling such a high bitrate (139Mbps). Unfortunately, the AP122 may not be optimized for streaming 4K UHD content at this level, particularly over wireless.

Here are a few suggestions that might help:

Optimize Bitrate: If possible, reduce the bitrate of your stream on the Plex server. This can help decrease the load on the AP122.

Ethernet Connection: If your TV supports a wired connection, switching to Ethernet can alleviate the wireless demand on the AP.

Upgrade Access Point: Consider upgrading to a more robust AP designed for high-bandwidth streaming, such as those with better CPU and memory capabilities.

As an alternative, you might also explore IPTV services that are designed for seamless streaming across various devices. For instance, MagisTV Premium offers a user-friendly platform with optimized streaming quality. It could be a great solution for enjoying 4K content without the buffering issues you're currently experiencing.

The high CPU usage on your AP122 during 4K UHD streaming is mainly caused by the ksoftirqd/0 process, which handles software interrupts (softirqs) in the Linux kernel. When you stream a high-bitrate video like one encoded at 139 Mbps it generates a large amount of network traffic, which increases the softirq load and pushes the AP’s CPU usage close to 98%. Since the AP122 is an entry-level access point, it may not have enough processing power to handle such heavy traffic efficiently, leading to performance issues like buffering.

To address this, you can take a few steps. First, try to limit multicast and broadcast traffic on your network, as too much of it can overwhelm the access point. Configuring your switches to control this type of traffic can help. Second, consider segmenting your network especially the management subnet to reduce unnecessary communication and lighten the load on the AP. Finally, if streaming high-resolution video on hdo box is a frequent requirement in your setup, upgrading to a higher-performance access point that’s better equipped for high-throughput demands might be necessary.

The high CPU usage on your AP122 during 4K UHD streaming is caused by the ksoftirqd/0 process, which handles deferred kernel tasks like managing heavy network traffic. When streaming high-bitrate video, such as a 139 Mbps 4K movie, this process can consume nearly all of the AP’s CPU resources, leading to buffering and performance issues. This indicates the AP122 is hitting its hardware limits, as it's designed for moderate bandwidth environments and may not be able to sustain such high-throughput demands. To mitigate the issue, you can reduce multicast and broadcast traffic, segment the network to spread the load across multiple APs, or upgrade to a more powerful access point designed for high-bandwidth hdo applications. These steps can help improve network stability and reduce buffering during intense streaming sessions.

Hello Community Forums,

When streaming a high-bitrate 4K UHD movie (139Mbps) through a Plex server, many users experience constant buffering—even with a solid 5GHz connection and low CRC errors. Upon investigation, the AP122 access point’s CPU usage spikes to 98%, suggesting it's struggling to handle the load efficiently. This hardware bottleneck can severely impact your streaming experience.

High CPU usage on an AP122 during streaming is commonly caused by heavy traffic load, Delta script advanced features running simultaneously, or firmware limitations. Real-time streaming can significantly increase packet processing, especially if encryption, deep packet inspection, or QoS rules are enabled. To mitigate this, ensure the access point is running the latest stable firmware, review and disable unnecessary services, limit the number of concurrent clients, and verify that bandwidth-intensive streams are properly optimized or offloaded where possible. If high usage persists, it may indicate that the AP122 hardware is reaching its performance limits for sustained streaming workloads.
