I’ve just picked up a VD6470 second hand for use in a Homelab, but having got it home it doesn’t look to be in good shape.

From the serial console, I can see in the logs it looks like there are problems with the filesystem, or possibly it has been wiped:

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

Is there a way I can boot the chassis (eg from USB ) to recover it?

Only way is to do a full reinstall:

https://gtacknowledge.extremenetworks.com/articles/Q_A/How-to-perform-netinstall-on-VDX-6740-and-6940-via-USB

You can also boot the VDX from this usb stick and analyze the issue, e.g. checking partition et al.
