MIB (Management Information Base) searches

I was going to ask if anyone wanted to guess what the number one searched item is in GTAC Knowledge but my post title kind of gives it away. One of the most searched term in GTAC Knowledge since we launched in April is MIB. Here are some of the search phrases we saw which included MIB:

MIB
mibs
download mib
enterasys mib
import mib
mib netsight
cannot perform action with MIB type = UNKNOWN

We think that one of the most common reasons for searching for MIB was to try to find them. So we have created an article about this: Location of Extreme Network MIBs (Management Information Base)

I have featured this article so that any search including MIB or MIBS will list this article at the top as a recommended article.

We have a few other articles that are related to MIBs which hopefully you will be able to find without too much ado with a quick search of GTAC Knowledge, for example Inventory Manager configuration backup fails with "Cannot perform action with MIB type = UNKNOWN." Error.

Since MIB was our number one search term since GTAC Knowledge was released, wanted to ask if there is anything else you all have been looking for related to MIBs? If so, please let us know on this thread and we will try our best to do the needful!

I wanted to let you all know that I got the MIB webpage updated to indicate where both the EOS and EXOS MIBs can be found. Previously this webpage only had links for the EOS MIBs. Now you can find the information about Extreme Network MIBs in multiple ways.

Why is there MIB.txt file with the new images. When I download a new one I see 10 or so files and the MIB files is included. I don't import this file to my solarwinds. I'm really just not clear what I can get from it.

Hi Ted,
Which new software images are you referring to? EXOS has always included a mib file with each release. The ones provided are for NMS software to know how to query a device for certain parameters, particularly when polling for non-standard information.

EXOS 16.1.2.14 patch 1-1 for half our gear then 15.3.5 for our legacy equipment. I've always saw the MIB file, but have never used it anywhere. I have NETSIGHT too. I don't have the experience in using MIB files and don't really know what I've been missing. Is it best practices after deploying new XOS to copy the MIBs over to your NMS? I haven't seen any documentation on this, but if you know of any please pass it along. We use NETSIGHT and Solarwinds NPM and NCM

As far as best practice goes - I'm from the 'simpler is better' networking camp.

Without knowing exactly which MIBs are in question I'll go out on a limb and say importing the mibs will make your life simpler.
