Good afternoon,In a client must perform a link balancing between two locations. The interlinking between them, atualemente, is performed through radio (Radwin), however the client requests to be balanced (50% and 50%) the traffic with an optical fiber. The port is gigabit and Fibre is 100.
What would be the best possible way?
Hello Felipe,

The ports will not equally load balance across a LAG. You can try tweaking the algorithm to see what the output is but this is a trial and error process.

Hi Felipe,

For Link Aggregation/LACP/802.3ad both ports must belong to the same vlans + both ports must be the same type and same speed.

It seems that you want to balance the traffic between 2 different ports using 2 different vlans. Am I correct?

If so, then you should have routing configuration to accomplish this as follows:

1. Lets say you want to balance between Gateway1 and Gateway2
2. You should have 2 routes to the same destination using both Gateways (1 route pointing to gw1 and another route pointing to gw2) and both routes must have the same metric/cost
3. If #1 and #2 are true than use the command "enable iproute sharing"

Please provide us more details about your scenario so we can guide you accordingly

To piggy back off what Henrique said, ip route sharing will act just like a lag in a sense it wont balance the traffic perfectly but will hash it out one or the other based on an algorithm.
Hello Felipe,

load sharing between a 1Gbps and a 100Mbps link can create performance problems if more than 100Mbps of traffic is sent to the slower link. The 1Gbps link might still have (a lot of) capacity left, but the 100Mbps link is saturated and will drop traffic. Using just the 1Gbps link (with the 100Mbps link as backup) should work much better.

If both connections allow the same speed of 100Mbps or less, you can configure the 1Gbps port to use 100Mbps and use port sharing (LAG) or routing with ECMP (route sharing).
Thank you all! However, reviewing the customer's design, I found that the connection via Radwin is not direct, with a third on the way Extreme x440 (Below the drawing).
I believe that this case will not be possible to achieve this balance, remembering that this whole network is Layer 2.
Hi Felipe,

Since LAG is enabled in the same source/destination switches, that would work if you had a second direct link between "Sede X440" and "Garagem X440".

I'm wondering about using MLAG. The Peers would be between both X440 in the right and a LAG from HSU to both MLAG peers.

Please take a look in the article below (consider the server in the diagram as the "HSU"):
Thank you for the tip!

Performed a lab on the item that you sent me and is working, however I have some questions:

Station occurring losses of packages, about 20x1.

This architecture is redundancy or balancing? How to check the traffic on each side of the network?
Hi Felipe, this feature allows traffic balancing + redundancy (if an MLAG port goes down).

When enabling the LAG in the HSU you have some hashing options which will help with traffic load balancing.

To confirm that you should use a traffic generator with random/multiple src/dst ips to easily see the counters incrementing for both MLAG ports.

You can use "show ports utilization" (you can press spacebar to alternate among "pps, bps or %" views)

Could you please share the Vlan and MLAG configuration and diagram with port numbers?

Hi Felipe, it seems the configuration is correct.

Please provide the following outputs:

For both MLAG peers:

show configuration vsm
show sharing
show mlag peer
show vlan gerencia
show vlan isc

For HSU:

show sharing
show vlan gerencia

I see 2 peer connection failures for the ISC link through the Radwin device. Just want to confirm if that's incrementing through the "show mlag peer" output.
Hi Felipe,

I see that you have enabled MLAG peers as Sede and Garagem switches.

That means you will see traffic load balancing from "Extreme Morro Cristo" to both Sede and Garagem.

If that's what you are trying to accomplish (traffic load balancing from "Extreme Morro Cristo" switch to both Sede and Garagem switches) then you just need to enable sharing for "Extreme Morro Cristo" with the command below:

enable sharing 1 grouping 1,2 algorithm address-based l3_l4

HI Henrique,

Initially I would like to thank you for the support you are giving me, being valuable.I realized the configuration of sharing the "Extreme Morro Chisto" and have no more packet loss.
Performing tests, I'm in laboratory, simulated falls and when it was at the port 15 (ISC) the connection failed.
Can you help me again.
Much obliged.
Hi Felipe, glad to hear this is fixed. That's The HUB! 🙂

The ISC link is responsible to keep both MLAG peers working as just 1 logical box (by exchanging health-check packets) and must by active all the time.

"If the ISC link alone goes down when the remote peer is alive, both the MLAG peers forward the south- bound traffic, resulting in duplication of traffic. However, this does not result in traffic loops. This is because the remote node load shares to both the MLAG peers and does not forward the traffic received on one of the load shared member ports to other member ports of the same load shared group."

To minimize ISC fail you can use 2 or more links between MLAG peers (ISC link) and enable sharing (LAG with LACP).

Another option would be using an alternate ipaddress (available in EXOS 15.5 and above) for MLAG peer health-check, but according to the diagram provided, the physical path is the same.
Hi Felipe, the only issue here is related to ISC link fail.

Using a secondary health-check path would fix this.

I was wondering about creating a new vlan (ISC2) to the following devices/ports:

- Sede port 1 (ip 1.1.1.1/30)
- Garagem port 1 (ip 1.1.1.2/30)
- Extreme Morro Cristo ports 1 and 2 (no ipaddress)

"To reduce the amount of traffic on the alternate path, health check messages are initiated on the alternate path only when the ISC link goes down. When the ISC link is up, no health check messages are exchanged on the alternate path."

Would be great to validate that in your lab and simulate all possible failures (including the ISC link).

Hi Felipe,

It's not a new MLAG peer. It's a 2nd health-check ISC vlan/ip.

Is case of a link fail between MLAG peers (Sede and Garagem), a 2nd health-check ISC vlan/ip (let's say "ISC2" vlan) will be used to check and assure both peers can still communicate and sync FDB tables till the main ISC link is restored.

This ISC2 vlan would be using the physical link through "Extreme Morro Cristo" switch as follows:

- Sede port 1 (ip 1.1.1.1/30)
- Garagem port 1 (ip 1.1.1.2/30)
- Extreme Morro Cristo ports 1 and 2 (no ipaddress)

Therefore no additional physical link is needed.

Usually this solution uses the "Mgmt" vlan as the 2nd path (new physical link is needed).

However, I believe that the above configuration might help.

That should be validated first.
