Hello Rod,

10GBASE-T uses a lot more power than fiber modules, and they can also heat up adjacent transceiver too much. See this: https://community.extremenetworks.com/extremeswitching-other-232729/10gb-sfp-10gbase-t-capabilities-7607208#post19005028

Hope that helps,
10GBASE-T SFP+	10338	16.2.2.4-patch1
21.1.3.2
Populate every other SFP+ port in system, with a maximum of half the 10Gb SFP+ ports configured with 10GBASE-T transceivers.
An adjacent SFP+ port should remain unused for every 10GBASE-T SFP+ installed.
Supported for Extended Edge Switching - EXOS 22.5 or later.

Why is this ..

Aslo asked if the 10GBAse T can auto down to 1Gig base T, I do not think it can , though I am open to suggestions.

We had this same question for Extreme Networks SE team, and the answer was about heat within the switch chassis itself with all the 10GB-X ports with 10GBASE-T connection will create inside of the switch. By enabling only every other port it will be able to remain cool enough to function correctly.

As a follow up question, if a 10338 is installed in port 1, does ‘adjacent port’ include BOTH ports 2 and 3?

Kind Regards,

PS hello Rod, been a long time.

Miggy, the heat problem exists in horizontally adjacent ports, like 1,3,5,7 and so on. You can have any other SFP in any other slot as long as the slots on both sides (horizontally) of a 10Gbase-T SFP are empty. The most efficient way would be to have 10GBase-T SFPs in port 1 and 2 leaving 3 and 4 empty and then continuing with fiber SFPs if you only need two copper SFPs. If you need multiple copper, 1,5,9,13 is OK even if 2,4,6,8,10 and so on are fiber SFPs. There is a gap vertically between the SFP boards and connectors that enables airflow in the space between, so the problem is only in horizontally adjacent ports.

/Fredrik
