onie and SummitX just vary on the chipset they are intended to be installed on. Functionally, they are the same code.

Optics.xmod--This XMOD application is intended for use by Extreme customers to provide support for transceivers on EXOS products without need to upgrade EXOS image. Support for those transceivers will be added via the Optics XMOD without having to wait for a future EXOS release.

“onie and SummitX just vary on the chipset they are intended to be installed on. Functionally, they are the same code.” - so it’s only for some Summit models? which one? for some switches we can use as SummitX.xos so onie.xos, or both of them?

“Optics.xmod--This XMOD application is intended for use by Extreme customers to provide support for transceivers on EXOS products without need to upgrade EXOS image. Support for those transceivers will be added via the Optics XMOD without having to wait for a future EXOS release.” - could you please explain in details?

Thank you!

As Brad indicated, ONIE (Open Network Install Environment) is meant for a number of our newest EXOS platforms.

As of EXOS 30.3, ONIE platforms are: X465, X590, X690, X870

SummitX 30.3 is for: X440-G2, X450-G2, X460-G2, X620, X670-G2, X770

Regarding the optics xmod, think of it as a way for us to update EXOS code for additional optics, without having to wait for a separate EXOS code update.

Hi, Brad!

Could you please tell what exactly additional optics?

You mean by link? - https://www.extremenetworks.com/support/compatibility-matrices/summit-extremeswitching-and-e4g-components-sfp-sfp-qsfp-qsfp28-support/

For example “Note: To use QSFP28 active optical cable for stacking, an ExtremeXOS patch is required. To obtain the patch, contact Extreme Networks Support.”

In case of “Note: Only QSFP28 direct-attach passive copper cable, at lengths up to 5 meters, can be used in X590 stacking ports -- except when an ExtremeXOS patch is installed with added support for select QSFP28 transceivers and active optical cables. To obtain the patch, contact Extreme Networks Support.” with this optics.xmod we can use optics with lengths more then 5 meters? But in this case what lengths limit? And we could use this optics only for stacking or for uplinks too?

Thank you!

Just a quick precision: it’s not really the chipset that matters, but the CPU. ONIE is required for x86 based platforms.

Yes, these platforms are x86-based (that should be in the DS). The others are MIPS-based. So you understand there’s a bit of a difference in the binaries, little/big endian architecture, to start with, if it speaks to you.
