Ciao Folks,

I have 7 AP410c’s (10.3r2 firmware) in one building and I am having Roaming/Handoff Latency or an unacceptable degree of “Sticky WAP Syndrome” with my customer’s multiple iPhone 12’s (iOS 14).

Not a problem with other devices. i.e. my iPhone 6 Plus works flawlessly while strolling, walking even running around all 10 Acres in any of the 5 buildings (total 11- AP410C’s) or outside and connected to any of 4 AP460S12C’s.

I have been through 5 or 6 long tech support sessions and implemented the many suggested adjustments; all to no avail.

The work around is to turn WiFi off/back on when moving from AP zone to AP zone.

This is wearing thin and really is not a solution as some of the users need to maintain connectivity as they move around; not an unreasonable request. 🙂

I have had them turn off Apple’s “WiFi Assist” & “Private Address” features and that has helped, but not enough.

I am at my wit’s end!

Anybody got any thoughts &/or suggestions?

Best Regards,

Ric Hults

Hello Ric,

We have no visibility into your radio profile configs so we’ll provide you with some suggestions:

1 - Make sure you are not using the default radio profile and that you have already cloned it

2 - Under Deny connection requests from legacy clients using: check the 802.11a/b/g radio button.

3 - Try reducing the radio transmit power (recommended max should be 14 db)

4 - Try with the Safety Net setting off to see if this helps

5 - If above do not help, try enabling Weak Signal Probe Request Suppression and set the threshold that will force the wireless client to look for a better AP to connect to.

I hope this helps

I just deployed 410c with the same 10.3r2 firmware and in limited testing it takes about 2 minutes for clients to connect, I often have to turn off WIFI and turn it back on.

Did the solution provided help? My transit power is at 7db, as well as Weak Signal Probe Request Suppression. I have a floor (12) of 410c’s and no clients just me and a couple of devices for testing and I am seeing this behavior.

“… We have no visibility into your radio profile configs ...”

Actually you HAVE had; on at least 6 “top tier engineer” tech support phone calls …..all to no avail.

Which is why I’m pleading my case here *before* my client makes me rip out this load of garbage and replace it with a system that performs even basic WiFi functions like WiFi Calling on a standard current iPhone. (which this one *still* doesn’t do; reliably).

What happened to you Aerohive!?!?!

I swore by your WiFi Systems for well over a decade.. My first Aerohive AP’s were hand delivered by a founding engineer, 15yrs ago. Now, not so sure

Remember this?

“... Aerohive joined Barack Obama's ConnectED initiative in October 2014, when it partnered with Apple Inc. and provided wireless connectivity to the schools receiving Apple products. ...”

Now it seems ur treating Apple(& me) like ‘a redheaded step child’.

Can we resolve this together, or what!? I would *really* like to be able to 100% trust that Aerohive Products work. (like I used to)

Best,

Ric Hults

Hey Ric,

People here actually don’t have. Sharing this configuration would shed some useful light on your environment.

GTAC and Hub are two separate things. Both Extreme and non-Extreme engineers are trying to help here in their spare time. Perhaps you could provide your case number to someone from here to put additional pressure (<USER-MENTION data-id="9898887">@Sam Pirok</USER-MENTION>?).

Assuming by your last message, Weak Signal Probe Request Suppression didn’t improve the situation?

I would also try to get down to 10.3r1 that several people here reported as the most stable in 10.3rX release train so far.

Hope that helps,

Tomasz

Thanks for the mention Tomasz! I see we have a case open already and that we spoke yesterday and have a another call for later this week scheduled. The case is also with our top support tier already so I can’t request an escalation, but if the case stalls please feel free to let me know and I’ll follow up on it from my side of things.

Hi,

where the heck is the “Weak Signal Probe Request Suppression” setting? i think ive looked though everything, and i just dont see it?

I got a bunch of anomaly reports, and the recommendation was “A low number of clients is causing high airtime utilization. Check your data rate configurations and consider enabling probe request suppression to prevent clients with low SNR from connecting to this AP.”

a previous article was old and out of date, so the instructions were not helpful.

I thought i could go with enabling the weak signal probe first, and then look at data rate (which i might assume is in the same place as the probe one), but i cant find those settings anywhere.

thanks,

J.

I still cant find the Weak Signal part, but think i found the others for rate limiting.

However, while I saw not to touch MCS along, i think the rates are way to high for ac and ax, this is what ive got:

the above pic is for ax.

3602.9 mbps!! 4803.x mbps… im experiencing quite a few issues. Ive turned off 2.4ghz off every AP except the outdoor AP1300, and the rest of our AP650(ah) seem to be having issues, the anomaly issue i put my my reply above this one. but id rather bring down the speeds even on ax if it means im going to have less complaints and issues with the AP’s…. it only lets you toggle from 9 to 7. whats the worse that can happen is I lower all streams to 7 on ac and ax ?

also, if anyone knows where the other setting is, the enabling probe request suppression one, id appreciate the help.

thanks,

J.

The Weak Signal Probe Request Suppression option is in the Radio Profile. You can find the Radio Profile you are using by going to Monitor> Devices> Click on the hostname of the AP> Go to Configure on the left hand side menu> Go to Interface Settings (below the configuration header on the left hand side menu)> Expand the wireless Interface section and select the radio you’d like to look at (wifi0 or wifi1), the radio profile in use will be listed here.

To edit the Radio Profile note the name of the object in use, then go to Configure> Common Objects> Expand Policy> Radio Profiles> Find the object name you noted earlier and click on the Radio Profile name to open that object to edit it. Please note that you won’t be able to save changes made to default objects; if you’re using a default Radio Profile and you want to make changes I’d suggest cloning it and then making your changes so you know you’re starting with the same settings as you had before.

I don’t know enough about the MCS rates to really weigh in there, but in the past the general recommendation was to not alter the MCS rates very much at one time, just to make sure no drastic changes happened all at once on a production network.

Also, just for future searches, if you’re looking for a setting in XIQ and you know what it’s called, you can always click on the question mark icon towards the bottom of the left hand side bar. That will take you to the XIQ help file which has most of the features and options within XIQ documented. In this case, a search for “Weak signal probe request” gives one result, the Radio Profile Settings page. Or I’m always happy to help you find what you need, just wanted to pass that on in case it’s faster for next time!

<USER-MENTION data-id="9881414">@torin.mckellar</USER-MENTION> I am having a similar problem with the 3500 AP 410C’s I just installed. Clients get connected but “no internet” message which seems related to DHCP after a minute or two clients get a valid IP address and work fine. I have tried every version of IQ Engine with no change in behaviour, I have a case open and sent tech support a frame filter for DHCP on a client showing this behaviour and sent the tech data from AP as well but not getting anywhere.

Thanks I appreciate it, out of curiosity <USER-MENTION data-id="9882115">@sfolk</USER-MENTION> what type of switches are you using? Firmware version 10.3r3 has helped, although I still see stickiness with these devices.

Im being forced into doing that update myself, to all our AP’s (650ah 1130, and one other i dont recall model). Yup, guess we will see!

I had to do it after finding my own fix for an issue where i couldnt do a delta or complete update on most my AP’s.. it was an upgrade they did when going form hive to xiq, and it caused issues on my side of things… thanks bonjour protocol, thanks extreme! if you are bored, heres my full post:
<OEMBED url="https://community.extremenetworks.com/extremewireless-aerohive-233216/delta-and-complete-config-update-fails-7831132/index2.html#post19913352"></OEMBED>

🙂

All of our AP’s are already at 10.3r4 and continue to have issues as described in this thread. I’d be curious to hear about it if anyone finds a solid fix that works. Our current scenario is that the client can be sitting in the room right under the AP yet it will remain connected a distant AP with a signal 20db worse than the one I am sitting by. The only way I can force it to connect to the one in the same room as me is to disable my wifi for a good 90 seconds then turn it back on and then I still have to wait about 30 seconds and then it will switch.

I am not sure if you are having the same issue, but I rolled back firmware to 10.1.2 on a couple of my 410c AP's and things seem more responsive.
