Wireless clients roaming between APs

What settings can I tweak to make sure wireless clients roam to closer access points in different parts of a building? We are using a C4110 controller with 3605 and 3610 APs.

I believe you can encourage roaming by disabling the lower data rates on your APs. The idea being that as the device gets further away from the original AP and the signal drops away, it will be unable to drop to the lower data rates on the AP (because you've disabled them) and roam to the a closer AP which can continue to support it on the higher data rates.

At least thats what I was told on my CWNA course last week, I've never personally used the technique myself.

That is correct > AP > Radio> Advanced : Set the Min.Basic Rate to 1 or 2 Mbps.

In wireless NIC, under properties >advanced, there is an option : Roaming Aggressiveness. You can tweak those setting to experience the change.

Like the guys before have said, you can modify roaming aggressiveness on the client or modify data rates so that the wireless network disappears at a certain distance from the AP, but the key thing to remember is that the decision to roam is taken solely by the client device itself. The decision is based on a variety of factors that could include among other things signal strength, SNR and retry rate. The roaming triggers and deciding factors vary among client device vendors and is included in the client device drivers. Making sure that device drivers are up to date can often yield better roaming algorithms on the device, so I always start there.
