How to upgrade RFS 4010 controller with new generations of AP?

Hi you

I am using AP 7161, 7562 and controller RFS4010 with license for 16 AP. I plan to add new AP 7562, however supplier informed that new generation AP7562 will have wifi 6 and it cannot be added to RFS4010 controller.

So how should my system be able to upgrade or replace the old APs with newer ones?

I upgraded the Controller for 1.5 years and I reported to my boss that it will add new Aps later on.

Tuan,

11ax WiNG OS APs, like the 360,460, and 560 models, require WiNG-7 firmware, but the RFS4010 is not supported by WiNG-7.

So in order to use the 11ax WiNG APs mentioned, you would need to upgrade the controller to a model that supports WiNG-7 - the closest matching hardware model would be the NX5500.

Or you could go with a VM solution (VX9000). The VX9000 is half the list price of the NX5500 and comes with 64 AP licenses built-in.

In either case, you could transfer your existing licenses from the RFS4010 to the new controller and would have the ability to run all new WiNG model APs.

The AP7562 is not WiFi 6. It’s still 802.11ac wave 2, which is WiFi 5. Just wanted you to be aware of that before you install them and expect to see 802.11ax.

Additionally, the AP7562 is supported by WiNG 5.9.8.2.002R, as is your existing controller. You should be able to upgrade the controller and adopt the new AP7562’s that you’ve already purchased.

If you need WiFi 6 you’ll have to step up to the new universal AP’s, which will also mean a new controller. At that point, you could go with a virtual Extreme Campus Controller.

I want to know exactly if the new AP 7562 can be managed with my existing controller RFS4010. @Curtis Brabham below says that AP7562 is supported by WiNG 5.9.8.2.002R, as is your existing controller.

@Chris Kelly what does it mean to transfer your existing licenses from the RFS4010 to the new controller. may I transfer my RFS4010 existed license to vx9000 and activate adoption all the ap?

To transfer controller licenses (common scenarios would be to replaced a controller that failed and had to be replaced...or a controller model upgrade was needed due to installing more APs than the controller is spec’d for) you simply need to open a case with GTAC. They will assess your license entitlement for your current controllers and be able to provide licenses for the new replacement/upgrade controllers. These license migrations are handled on a case-by-case basis.

The short answer is “yes” the RFS4000 does support the AP7562 with up to the lastest WiNG 5.x firmware.

I plan to buy more Outdoor Access Point 460e because AP 7562 End of sales. Then I use 460e to make a virtual controller while waiting to buy VX9000. Can Ap 7562 and 7161 upgrade to Wing 7?

7562 IS supported in WiNG-7. The 7161 is NOT.

The AP460e also cannot act as a virtual controller. Even if it could, it would only be able to adopt other AP460e”s.

The AP560i can be a virtual controller, but again it can only adopt other AP560i’s...unless that’s changed with the newer models and/or newer WiNG versions?

WiNG added heterogenous virtual controllers quite a while ago. The AP460 can be a virtual controller for the following APs: AP460, AP410, AP360, AP310, AP8533, AP8432, AP7662, AP7632, AP7612, AP7562, AP7532, AP7522.
