Hello,

Does anyone have and is able to provide me with firmware for RFS400 version 5.8.1.0-012R?

I have two RFSs in an Active-Pasive cluster with this firmware version, but I need to add another one to the cluster, except that I have version 5.7.2.0-008R on it. From what I've read, in order for the new member to be added to the cluster I need the same version on it as on the other RFS. Unfortunately I have no way to upgrade the existing cluster to a higher version. On the support site the firmware version 5.8.1.0-012R is unfortunately no longer available.

Regards,
Przemyslaw

Hello,

For all Extreme Network products the following procedure should be followed to download the firmware:

https://extremeportal.force.com/ExtrArticleDetail?an=000083342

May we ask the reason behind adding a third member to the cluster since the only currently supported cluster configuration is Active/Standby (2 members only)?

BR

Here you can download some of the FW for RFS4000. RFS4000

Although, I would strongly recommned to use a more recent version than 5.8.1 (at least 5.8.6.7, which addressed the Krack vulnerability, better 5.9.1.11 - last one to support the broadest range of legacy WING APs). If you have admin/superuser rights on RFS, you should be able to do that. But you at least need to have priviledge level to be able to add new cluster member. (probably network admin). If you have AP75xx series in the system, you would also need a FW for this platform, since it's not included in the RFS image. But I'm sure you know all this 🙂

If you need to transfer licenses from a defective RFS4000 to a replacement unit, yes it's possible. You will need to create a case for this and we'll be happy to assist.

BR

That's not true...Within WING5 you can have more RFS within 1 cluster. (6 units since FW v 5.6.x) We still have installations with 3 units, for example. With legacy WING 3 - this limit was 12 units, then, perhaps with some earlier WING 5 versions, there was a limit of 2 for a short period of time, but it is definitelly possible with the versions I shared with you.

The AP and AAP licences are HW (MAC/SN) bound, so they cannot be "moved" to another RFS. But 1 unit of RFS4000 is capable of adopting up to 144 APs (since fw 5.5.x) and with local bridging, you really only need 1 unit to manage whole WING network and all APs would live "forever" even when this unit goes down. So to extend any existing RFS4000 based network, you only need to add more licenses.

For reference, read release notes to FW 5.5.0 and 5.6.0

That's not true as well 🙂 Well, technically you can create cluster containing more than 2 nodes, but it is officially unsupported.
I suppose mentioned installation is unsupported anyway so why worry 🙂

A license transfer solution would be best for me. How can we make this work. If I already have a license for 24 APs on the device we are transferring licenses to, will they be overwritten after the transfer or will they be totaled?
For example, we do a transfer of 10 licenses then will I have 10 licenses or 34 on the destination device?
How do I set up the case?

License transfer requires active Extreme service contract. If you don't have it, then Extreme most probably will not transfer them. But still you can ask your local sales representative.

Secondly RFS4K has already 6 licenses on-board. They are not transferable as they are tied to hardware. If your RFS died, then (assuming that you have active service contract), Extreme will replace failed RFS for working one which will contain 6 licenses on board, and will transfer all additional licenses you had on broken one. In total you will get what you had before.

About licenses question. You cannot transfer 10 licenses as you can only have packs of 6, 12, 24 and 48 licenses. So you cannot have RFS with 34 licenses as you cannot divide it by 6. It's just a math.
To check what you have, go to CLI and run command: "show licenses" and I believe you will see few license keys there, as you can have one key for 6 AAP, and other key for 12 APP and so on - all of them on on device.

In short, yes - they stack up. Up to the supported limit, which for RFS4K is 144.

Adam
