topic G-Series SNTP Does Not Function Without a Configured Host IP Address in FAQs

Article ID: 11562

Products
G-Series, firmware 6.03.00.0022 and lower

Changes
Configured Simple Network Time Protocol ('set sntp...').
Did not configure a host IP address ('set ip address...').

Symptoms
SNTP is not functioning.

Cause
With earlier firmware; SNTP operation requires the presence of a host IP address, and setting up a routed interface is not a functional substitute.

Solution/Workaround
Upgrade to firmware 6.03.01.0008 or higher, and then specify the existing router loopback address or an existing local routed interface as the "SNTP interface" (i.e. 'set sntp interface {loopback loop-ID | vlan vlan-ID}').

Pre-upgrade workaround:
Best practice calls for building a management VLAN and configuring a host IP address that corresponds to that VLAN (5573).
