There are some basic functionality differences among the Enterasys Networks IEEE 802.3ab 1000BaseT products. This document explains those differences. &lt;BR /&gt;
&lt;BR /&gt;
Note that Flow Control is normally auto-sensing, for all devices, but as an option can be manually set. &lt;BR /&gt;
&lt;BR /&gt;
Further, in Part 3 Section 2 Clause 28D.5 Page 466 of the 802.3 Standards document, it states:&lt;BR /&gt;
"28D.5 Extensions required for Clause 40 (1000BASE-T)&lt;BR /&gt;
Clause 40 (1000BASE-T) makes special use of Auto-Negotiation and requires additional MII registers. This use is summarized below. Details are provided in 40.5.&lt;BR /&gt;
a) Auto-Negotiation is mandatory for 1000BASE-T. (40.5.1)&lt;BR /&gt;
b) ..." &lt;BR /&gt;
&lt;BR /&gt;
The reason auto-negotiation is mandatory is primarily due to the need to negotiate the Master and Slave clocking roles between the link peers. It is therefore not possible to hard-set Speed and Duplex settings for 1000BaseT ports &lt;I&gt;running at a 1000Mb/s speed&lt;/I&gt;, though some products do permit control of advertised abilities. &lt;BR /&gt;
