Multicast routing between VLANs

Multicast routing between VLANs

Hello,  I am trying to set up multicast routing between vlans and not having much success (have not set this up before and don't know a lot about multicasting).  We have some network lighting appliances that our vendor says uses multicast.      Here is my scenario:

Extreme X440 switch - VLAN20 has device attached that utilizes multicast.  While on this Vlan20 I can run this vendor's program to see the devices utilizing multicast (finds them automatically).  If i switch over to VLan1, i cannot see the devices although i can ping devices on VLAN20 (normal routing is fine).

Now, this switch connects back to our Dell Core switch that does routing on our network.  Back on the Dell switch, if i am on VLAN20, again, i can use the vendor's program to see the devices but if i go to VLAN1 i cannot.

So - do i need to set up the multicast routing on the Dell or do i set it up on the Extreme switch that the devices hang off of?

Any direction/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Take a look at mvr, simple and no pim (multicast routing protocol)  needed.

Just 2 steps needed.

  1. enable mvr
  2. configure mvr add vlan <MULTICAST_SENDER_VLAN>
