firmware 8.2r5 was added to hivemanager onprem 12.8.3.1, but in the firmware release info, it says that this firmware is only compatible with HiveManager NG 19.2.1.1 ... so can we update APs to 8.2r5 if hivemanager onprem is version 12.8.3.1 or not?

official aerohive response is : no, not compatible.

it can also be done with HMNG on prem, it was a question of support compliance if we don't respect the management platform requirements stated on the release notes.

We actually don't even use 8.2r2 for our on-prem legacy HM platforms. But still are able to manually put virtually any HiveOS available onto the VM to use for customers. I'm not super fluent w/NG to know if something similar can be done though.

We don't have the same problem. your legacy HM platform is compatible. Latest HMNG on prem is not.
As stated on release notes of hiveOS 8.2r5 "Management platforms supported: HiveManager 8.2r2and later, and HiveManager NG 19.2.1.1and later".
So old version of HM has more support than HMNG on prem for the latest golden HiveOS firmware ?!
