APs need to talk to each other in order for clients to be able to roam between APs without having to re-authenticate every time they switch to a new AP. APs share client connectivity information, mainly in the roaming cache, so that all APs in the surrounding network are aware of the client device's connected status and they will all pass the client's traffic until one AP informs the rest that the client has disconnected.
