Brownfield VOSS site. Sync switch configuration to XMC, then enforce safely

Brownfield VOSS site. Sync switch configuration to XMC, then enforce safely

Hi,

Have a brownfield installation of VOSS, where running the enforce preview you see something along the lines of below:

So initially I do not get why there is so much difference between the desired and current when this device has never been configured through Enforce before i.e. why the desired is showing content that isn’t on the current and visa a versa, I would expect only current?

Being a brownfield installation the current configuration on the switch is gospel, so needs to be the starting point for the configuration in XMC (Desired).

Is there a way to safely synchronise in one direction or the other i.e. ‘Enforce’ will push the desired configuration to the switch, but it would be nice if there was something in the other direction to get everything to go green in XMC i.e. sync in the other direction, and copy configuration of switch to XMC.

I believe the way to do is simply to hit the red arrow on each item to merge current with desired, then hit enforce.

I’m a little nervous about doing that with so many differences, that then hitting enforce could still change some config on the switch, with a live network that could present a potential for disaster.

Anyone done this before, what's your experience?

Thanks

Hi Martin,

the XMC DB and the VSP are not in sync. To accomplish it you have to go for configure device and push the button Reload Device. Complete the task with Save.

Now you should have no issue anymore.

Thx
Markus

Same here, we never use XMC for such purposes because it is too incomplete in my opinion to do full configurations.

What I know from playing around, Configure Device → Reload Device should remove all the discrepancies between Desired and Current when doing an Enforce Preview. However after reloading still some VLANs were marked as red because the name was missing.

I also noticed different behavior of XMC depending on its version with combinations of VOSS software.
