Goals
Expected failed fan status.
Expected normal fan status.
Solution
In the output of a 'show system' or 'show support' command, failed fans display as
"Not Operating"[1] -or-
"Not Installed and/or Not Operating"[2] -or-
"Installed and Not Operating"[3]
...and there will also be a "Fan
x has failed." or "Unit
x: Fan
x has failed." or "Unit
x Fan Group
x failed" (
5743,
10819) syslog item issued.
However, for the C3K models a fan status of "Not Installed and/or Not Operating" does not necessarily mean a fan has failed.
Further, by design not all fan grills are populated with a fan.
Outlined below are the fans installed in each of these products, along with what is normally expected in the fan-specific output of a 'show system' or 'show support'.
- The G3-Series (all models) has three fans installed, numbered 1, 2, and 3.
There are only three fans displayed ("Fan Group 1-Status", "Fan Group 2-Status", "Fan Group 3-Status"). The C5-Series non-PoE 24-port models (C5G124-24, C5K125-24, C5K175-24) have two fan groups[4] installed, numbered 1 and 3.
Group 1 contains fans 1, 2, and 3; and Group 3 contains fans 6 and 8; for a total of five fans.
Both the "Fan Group 2-Status" and "Fan Group 4-Status" display as "Not Installed".
One of the six fan grills on the right is always empty, so does not indicate hardware failure.
The C5-Series non-PoE 48-port models (C5G124-48, C5K125-48) have two fangroups[4] installed, numbered 1 and 3.
Group 1 contains fans 1, 2, and 3; and Group 3 contains fans 6, 7, and 8; for a total of six fans.
Both the "Fan Group 2-Status" and "Fan Group 4-Status" display as "Not Installed".
The C5-Series PoE models (C5G124-24P2, C5G124-48P2, C5K125-24P2, C5K125-48P2) have three fan groups[4] installed, numbered 1, 2, and 3.
Group 1 contains fans 1, 2, and 3; Group 2 contains fans 4 and 5; and Group 3 contains fans 6, 7, and 8; for a total of eight fans.
The "Fan Group 4-Status" displays as "Not Installed". The C3-Series 10-gigabit models (C3K122-24, C3K122-24P, C3K172-24) have three fans installed, numbered 1, 3, and 4.
The "Fan Group 2-Status" displays as "Not Installed" (f/w 6.42.05.0001 and higher) or "Not Installed and/or Not Operating" (f/w 6.42.03.0004 and lower).
A "Fan Group 2-Status" display of "Not Installed and/or Not Operating" is always a normal condition, so does not indicate hardware failure.
The C3-Series other models have two fans installed, numbered 1 and 2.
There are only two fans displayed ("Fan1-Status", "Fan2-Status"). The C2-Series (all models) has two fans installed, numbered 1 and 2.

The "Fan2-Status" displays as "Not Installed".
