Home Lab for Extreme Networking. Would like to setup a lab to learn about Extreme networking. What switches are good to buy off ebay for a home lab. What switches would be good to learn layer 3 routing and intervlan routing and is there a free version of netsight.

Look for a couple of x440 switches on ebay (gen1). Pretty inexpensive and will cover all of the basics.

netsight is now called Extreme Management Center. You can download it from extranet.extremenetworks.com you will need license. You can get the license at the extranet also or you can contact local system engineer.

Extranet is also called portal :)

Good luck.

I think you could also use the EXOS VM images. You don't need hardware switches for learning networking.

You can found them here: https://github.com/extremenetworks/Virtual_EXOS

If you're just trying to learn, this is definitely your best solution.  Even second hand, Extreme stuff is not cheap.  To get decent routing features you would need to get the X450-G2 platform or better.

The VM is great for learning the command line. However there are some things that the VM lacks in...  just the physical, how to do things, the process of upgrading a switch for a beginner, having the serial port, dealing with the boot rom, all good things for a learner to have hands on equipment.

to answer the OP, Find x440 x460 if you can , older x450s are a dime a dozen right now, but they are limited in software.( r 12 I think?) .. and of course stay away from any 200, 300 400 models ( they run EWARE not xos) stick with the 440/450/460  models.  when you get to learning PIM and OSPF there is a trial license to enable the higher license of a 460 for some of those commands ( it is time limited and can only

Try to stay away from the 430's too. They run SummitLite and you may be missing some features that you'll want to experiment with. As David said, 450's are cheap but 440's are likely a better choice.

Do you work for a Extreme Partner because that would change the answers a bit.

@community
could you even generate/get a XMC trial license without being a partner ?! I can't remember :-)

I'm pretty sure anyone can create a trial license as long as they have a portal account. Doesn't necessarily have to be a partner account.

Another thing that just came to my mind is noise.... we've 35°C / 95°F right now here in Austria and no one has a AC at home...... sometimes office buildings have on ... yes I'm melting :-(

In that case you'd like to make sure to have a switch that doesn't turn on his fans all the time if you are in the same room - for that I love my X440G2-12p-10G4 - sitting on my desk @0RPM

It's funny you bring that up... I have a 430p on my desk (fanless) that I bought after having a 440-8P which was noisy as heck! I've got two 440-24P's in a lab rack next to me too. Sounds like an F3 hurricane in here when I'm up and running with everything!

Depends on the PoE load and type. The 12 port version with one AP is quiet (fans stopped) even if there is 28C in the room.

More PoE means more load means more heat ...
