How to raise the minimum basic data rate of a 2,4 and 5 GHz wifi access network via the hivemanager?

Hello everybody,

i want to raise the  minimum basic data rate of our 2,4 (to 18 Mbit/s) and 5 GHz (to 24 Mbit/s ) wifi access network. But i do not know, where i can configure it. If i check the radio profile i didn't find anything about basic data rates. Could anyone help me please?

We are using the on-premises Hivemanager NG (build version 12.8.1.2-NGVAMAY18 ) and a lot of AP230 (HiveOS 8.3r4 Mayberry build-195604 ).

Thank you in advance.

Regard,

Andreas Brück

You're welcome.

While there's no hard set rule for it, there's not a lot of data to prove it useful enough to warrant doing. See here http://divdyn.com/disable-lower-legacy-data-rates/ for one opinion and here - https://getsatisfaction.com/aerohive/topics/disabling-basic-rates-for-802-11n-or-802-11ac for another conversation regarding it.

To me I see it as this. If you're setting your MBR to 12/24, you'd need to maintain a decent enough RSSI/SNR to maintain connected to the APs particular BSSID. In doing that, you're basically indirectly saying that the client would need to stay above a certain signal level and it would rarely if ever need to use the lower MCS rates anyways. The only time it may, would be in a highly congested area where retries get crazy and it drops down to a lower MCS rate and modulation type to try to get the frame to be ACK'd.

Here is a reference sheet for MCS rates and their required RSSI/SNR values - https://www.wlanpros.com/resources/mcs-index-802-11ac-vht-chart/

Hey Brian, hey Ashley,

thank you very much for your help. Can anyone explain me why it is ill advised to adjust any MCS rates needed for 802.11n/ac/ax?

Hi Andreas,

You'll find the minimum data rates within the Policy > SSID > Additional Settings > Optional Settings > Radio and Rates 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g & 5 GHz 802.11a section
