Extreme (Aerohive) Wireless Newbie - Have Questions

Extreme (Aerohive) Wireless Newbie - Have Questions

I hope I may ask a small number of (I hope) relatively straightforward questions.

Environment:

  • 2 APs
  • AP130 - Garden Office
  • AP230
  • Edgerouter-X-SFP
  • Meraki PoE Switch
  • 200/200 Internet circuit

I’ve added both APs to the really rather nice CloudIQ Connect tier and updated the OS without a problem.

Questions:

  1. In the “Managed By” column above, one AP has “XIQ” and one doesn’t - what does that mean?
  2. I think I’ve read that I can setup a DHCP server on one of the APs - is this a recommended config for creating a segmented Guest SSID for un-trusted devices, rather than creating a  vLAN?
  3. Can I use an SSID with the PPSK feature on the Connect tier? It’s unclear, from what I’ve read.
  4. There is mention of a mobile app here - https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/extreme-redefines-value-proposition-for-cloud-management-in...

Has it launched yet? I can’t see it in either App Store

  1. What’s with (this has bugged me for years, since first coming across Aerohive in 2015) the bizarre wall mount bracket? It would orient the AP virtually upside down, certainly not in the aesthetically pleasing diamond orientation…..

Cheers All and I hope you are having a pleasant break.

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan, thanks for the detailed questions! Please find the answers below:

  1. I believe you should see both APs as managed by XIQ there. I checked my lab and I also have some APs showing XIQ and some showing nothing in that column. If you have support and would like to open a case, then we can file an engineering ticket for you to get that fixed.
  2. You can set up a DHCP server on an AP, this guide reviews how to do that: https://extremeportal.force.com/ExtrArticleDetail?an=000079964&q=DHCP%20server%20on%20AP . You would still need to create a new VLAN for the new IP scope that the AP DHCP server will be hosting, we can’t have multiple DHCP servers on one VLAN.
  3. No, PPSK is not included on Connect. You would need to upgrade to Pilot to use PPSK features.
  4. I believe the app you’re looking for can be found here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.extremenetworks.extremecloud
  5. I’m sorry to hear the mount has been frustrating. If you can contact your sales engineer to file a feature request, we can see about getting that updated. If you’re unsure who to reach out to for your sales engineer, please let me know and I will email that information directly to you.

Hope that helps, please let me know if I can clarify anything.

Happy new year!!
