Question about "A" Model Transition in S-Series

Dear all.

It´s about the "A" Model Transition in S-Series.

I have some questions about the technical behavior in case of a service/incident.

Is it possible to



- replace a “A” with a “non-A” Model when MACSec is enabled on the Chassis? (HW or SW Limitation?)

- replace a non-A with a “A” Model? What happen with the configuration of that Slot? (Normaly replacing am module with a not identical model cause configuration loss for that Slot)

- replace a “A” with a non-A Model without MACSec or EEE enabled? What happen with the configuration of that Slot? (Normaly replacing am module with a not identical model cause configuration loss for that Slot)

Per the S-Series Configuration Guide:
"The MACsec feature requires MACsec-capable hardware and a MACsec license. Use the

code:

show macsec

command to determine if your hardware supports MACsec and if a license is installed. Separate licenses are required per module (S-Series) and per chassis (stacked 7100s)."

You appear to be referring to the chassis-based...

SL8013-1206 [f/w 8.11.01.0014+] and SL8013-1206A [f/w 8.31.01.0006+] SL8013-1206-F8 [f/w 8.11.01.0014+] and SL8013-1206-F8A [f/w 8.31.01.0006+] ST2206-0848 [f/w 8.01.01.0016+] and ST2206-0848A [f/w 8.22.02.0012+] ST8206-0848-F8 [f/w 8.12.02.006+] and ST8206-0848-F8A [f/w 8.22.02.0012+]

Also note that the complete list includes the standalone SSA-T1068-0652 [all f/w 7.x+] and SSA-T1068-0652A [f/w 8.01.01.0016+].
In all cases the later-released "A" model supports MACsec (with a license), though the original "non-A" model does not.

Q. Is it possible to replace a “A” with a “non-A” Model when MACsec is enabled on the Chassis?
A. Yes. With firmware 8.31.02.0014 and higher, that slot's module configuration will in general NOT be lost. [Per release notes]
MACsec will not function on the replacement module because it is not hardware-supported there.
I speculate that any MACsec-related module configuration for that slot WILL be lost.
