Can someone explain me the difference between the OS used for the VSP and ERS series switches.

Are both the devices using same ?

Name of the OS used bu the VSP and ERS switches ?

EOS/EOL for the operating system used by the above devices ?

Any vendor specific Hardening/ Security guidelines ?

Thanks in advance 🙂

VSP devices run on VOSS (VSP Operating System Software) whereas ERS devices (4900/5900) runs on BOSS (Baystack Operating System Software) and no, they are not the same. The command syntax is completely different.

Check this link for EoS/EoL of these OS

VSP/VOSS is based on LINUX.

BOSS/ERS is based on vxWorks.

The Syntax been VOSS(VSP) and BOSS(ERS) is about 90% similar.  You can’t cut and paste an ERS config to a VSP config.  But the essentials are the exact same.  IP, VLAN, PORT CONFIG, TAGGING.  etc etc.

There are just some advance features like QoS, Fabric commands, Show commands that are different.

Also there are Software Release Recommendations for VOSS/VSP 8600 that may be useful to you.

Software Lifecycle Policy document contains EOS/EOL information on the OS.

End of Sale End of Support document contains EOS/EOL information on the hardware.

Hope this helps.
