Reliability Problem with 100G-SR4BD-QSFP100M in 7520-48YE-8CE

The first time we inserted 100G-SR4BD-QSFP100M transceivers into two 7520-48YE-8CE switches, we did not get a link. The output of the command "show pluggable-optical-modules detail" indicated that neither switch was applying any transmit power. Looking closely at the logs we noticed the following messages:

1 2024-11-08T13:25:34.611Z CORE-1 CP1 - 0x000e0598 - 00000000 GlobalRouter HAL INFO GBIC inserted in slot 1 Port 53 Type:100GbBiDi Vendor:EXTREME NETWORKS non-qualified transceiver

We then double-checked https://optics.extremenetworks.com/ regarding support for this transceiver, and this shows that the 7520-48YE-8CE switch supports it starting with Fabric Engine 9.0. We had upgraded all switches to 9.1 before inserting any transceivers.

We then moved one transceiver into a different port, and the logs showed it as "qualified":

CORE-1:1#1 2024-11-08T13:45:12.510Z CORE-1 CP1 - 0x000e0598 - 00000000 GlobalRouter HAL INFO GBIC inserted in slot 1 Port 52 Type:100GbCR4 Vendor:EXTREME NETWORKS qualified transceiver

Edit: The above line was from a different transceiver, the following is from the same kind of transceiver as the first:

1 2024-11-08T14:25:29.383Z CORE-1 CP1 - 0x000e0598 - 00000000 GlobalRouter HAL INFO GBIC inserted in slot 1 Port 50 Type:100GbBiDi Vendor:EXTREME NETWORKS qualified transceiver

After inserting additional 100G-SR4BD-QSFP100M transceivers, we observed the following:

  • Sometimes, the transceivers are recognized as "qualified", sometimes as "non-qualified".
  • Removing, then inserting a "non-qualified" transceiver often (but not always) results in the transceiver turning into "qualified".
  • Sometimes, the "remove, then re-insert" procedure needs to be repeated several times before the transceiver is "qualified".

This leaves a bad feeling, since the above might also happen after a power outage. (We do not know this yet. A single warm restart worked.)

Is this a known problem? Has anybody else experience this or similar problems?

(Please note that we have used official Extreme Networks transceivers, and we did check the "Extreme Optics Compatibility" tool before ordering.)

I do not immediately see a problem mentioned with this type of transceiver for switch types running Fabric-Engine/VOSS on the EXTREME site, I recommend opening a ticket for this.
