Need some direction on the proper update path for a VSP-8404C running 7.1.2.0. Preferably to the latest Major release. Thank you in advance.

A slight variation as confirmed by GTAC, a local Extreme SE and performed successfully in a production customer network:

v7.1.1.0>v8.1.8.0 -> v8.4.2.1 ->v8.5.3.0 >v8.8.1.0

Plan ahead with your Extreme SE on the details for the NLS/Segmented Management Interface which takes effect

when upgrading from 8.1.8.0 to 8.4.2.1

good advice.  many forget the config change required when you move past 8.2

the OP will want to read this.

Yes, https://www.extremenetworks.com/support/release-notes/ is your friend. Pick the OS (VOSS in your case), and the version, and the release notes will tell you what you can upgrade from. You might need to work your way back to your current version (as I'm sure Jave did), although there might be an easier way.

Be aware, however, that at version 8.2 and afterword, you need a segmented management interface. In the release notes, there are links on how to do this.

Hello,

Depending on your strategy

  • Never upgrade, good strategy when there are no issues but when it becomes unsupported then you must first upgrade and see if problem still occurs to get support.
  • Run latest version, can be dangerous when there are new features in the code, new features can mean new bugs.
  • Run the by the manufacturer advised version.
    The recommended version can be found on https://www.extremenetworks.com/support/compatibility-matrices/software-release-recommendations-for-...
    Actual, as of 4-Jan-2023, for VSP switches latest recommended version is VOSS 8.8.1.0.

Hope it helps
