Teams messages and Whats App messages not sent when using Extreme AP's

Hello Community,

I have a mixture of Fortinet AP's (slowly being phased out and Extreme AP 305C's and 410C's.  All the AP's, Fortinet and Extreme have the same SSID's and VLAN's applied.  

Users are authenticated on both Fortinet and Extreme Ap's with no issues.

The issue I have is, users connected to the Extreme AP's are unable to send Teams and Whats App messages.  Everything else work fine - browsing, YouTube etc.

Teams and WhatApp messages work perfectly fine when connected to the Fortinet AP's.  This leads me to believe the issue lies somewhere with the Extreme Controller SSID setup or the Extreme AP itself.

Does anyone have any pointers or a fix for this?  Is there a configuration in the SSID that needs to be turned on/off etc?

One thing to verify is the User Profile that the wireless clients are assigned on the SSID.  There are potentially firewall rules in place to block Teams/WhatsApp messaging.  The User Profile is where firewall rules are applied to allow/block applications/services.

If you have an Extreme Partner, try to contact them for assistance, or the local Extreme Support Engineer.

The Firewall Rules under the User Profile rules is Disable so there is nothing configured for this currently.

Is this something that needs configuring to allow Teams/WhatsApp ?

If they are disabled, then the traffic should not be filtered.  The only other thing I could think of (without seeing the setup) would be if Multicast was used for these messages - however I do not think Teams nor WhatsApp use Multicast by default.

We have a number of customers that have Extreme Wireless and have no issue using Teams, so I feel there is some configuration issue that may be blocking those applications.  Is it possible there is another filter somewhere - Content Filter or something that is filtering the traffic coming from the Extreme APs vs the Fortinet APs?  Is there another firewall other than the Fortigate that is managing the Fortinet APs?

Hi BH,

The Fortinets do use their own controller.  However, there is nothing setup in terms of firewall rules that allow access to Teams/WhatsApp.  We have our main firewall.  This has subnets used by the SSID's set to allow.  I don't believe this is the issue as the Fortinets and the Extreme traverse the same routing paths, subnets and vlans.  One works, the other doesn't.

I have raised a ticket with Extreme and will see what they say.
