Adopt 7502s (running 5.9.x) to WiNG 7.2.x?

Hello!

We currently run WiNG 5.9.5 (and will be upgrading to 5.9.7 over the holidays).  We run many different AP models, including AP7161s (only 4 of them) and AP7502s (over 400 of them!).  Looking at the release notes for 7.2, it looks like all of our other APs will be supported, but these two models will not be.

My question is, could I adopt those APs (AP7161 and AP7502) running 5.9.7 to a VX9000 running 7.2.x?  With over 400 AP7502s, it will likely take us 4 years to upgrade them all under our current refresh cycle plans.

Also, I’m assuming WiNG 7.X is set to replace WiNG 5.X.  Are there any plans/dates for EOL for WiNG 5.X?

Thanks!

Hello Max,

We only support same firmware versions across the Enterprise (wlc and APs same versions). Quite possible that the AP7502 v5.9 could adopt to the VX9 v7, but definitely not advisable nor supported with Extreme Networks. When mis-match firmware is present on adopted AP, no config pushes can be made to the AP until the mis-match firmware is resolved.

Currently, the only reason to migrate to Wing 7 would be for the new AP5xx 802.11ax (WiFi6) access points. Based on what you currently have deployed, you will want to stay on Wing 5.9.x until you refresh the AP7161/AP7502 with an AP that is supported under Wing 7.

Thanks Christopher, that all makes sense.

Could an AP7502 running 5.9.7 be adopted by a VX9000 running 7.2.1?  If so, is it advisable to do so?

Hello Max,

The AP7161 is EOSL and last supported firmware release was v5.9.3.3-004R.

Currently, there are no plans to support AP7502 under Wing v7.  AP7502 is still supported under Wing 5 and latest is v5.9.7.0.

For AP7161 deployments, the highest firmware version you should be running right now is v5.9.3.3, until the AP7161s have been retired.

All Wing maintenance release notes detail what APs are EOL (not supported) and supported.

Wing 5 is still supported/sustained and we have not been notified that Wing 7 is replacing Wing 5, as of yet.

Please consult with your Extreme Sales/Account Team for future Wing road map inquires.
