'show limits'

Goals
Memory upgrade

Solution
For LSNAT and PIM support with firmware version 4.00.50 or higher, a 256 MB memory upgrade is required on any DFE blade, Platinum or Gold, running a router instance which utilizes these features.

For LSNAT support with firmware 5.01.58 or higher, a 256 MB memory upgrade is required on all DFE blades - Platinum or Gold - within the chassis/system. One LSNAT router per system is supported.

These features will not function and their CLI commands will not be visible if the additional memory (part# DFE-256MB-UGK) is not present.

Firmware 5.31.17 release notes (for example, Platinum) state:
"LSNAT requires 256 MB of DRAM on ALL modules in the chassis and an advanced license key. This requirement is now enforced. Failure to have the memory upgrade installed on all modules will result in service interrupting behavior upon upgrade."

Side-effects of a memory upgrade:
  • MSTP capacity increases from 32 to 64 802.1s trees.
  • RMON capture buffers increase from 0.5 MB to 4 MB.
  • IGMP multicast groups increase from 4096 to 16384 (Platinum f/w 5.35.16+)
Shown below is the output of a 'show limits' command, on a Platinum system (f/w 5.11.21) with the extra memory installed on each blade in the system, and the 'set router limits route-table 25000' command issued (1563).

For PIM support with firmware 6.11.01.0020 or higher, 256 MB of memory (possibly requiring upgrade) is required on all DFE blades - Diamond, Platinum, or Gold - within the chassis/system. One PIM router per system is supported.

This feature will not function and its CLI commands will not be visible if the additional memory is not present.

Firmware 6.01.01.0020 release notes (for example, Platinum) state:
"Systems running pre-6.x firmware with PIM routing configured
System memory requirements prior to 6.XX were such that only the modules that run the PIM routing protocol needed to have 256MB of DRAM. Systems running PIM now require 256MB of DRAM installed on all modules in the chassis."

Memory upgrade requirements may change in future releases. Please consult the release notes for your product and firmware version, for the most up to date information.
