X460-48t - unable to type on PUTTY

I have a second hand Summit X460-48t

I've tried using Linux / Windows, using several different cables, several different software packages (Tera Term, Putty, Screen)

The furthest I ever seem to be able to get is where the switch is doing it's normal thing (as seen on the console window) but when I see things like the instruction to "Press and gold <spacebar> to enter the bootrom" - I'm unable to get my machine to send the spacebar command over to the switch...

Eventually when I get given the ability to log in (pending-AAA) login:
I am still unable to type anything on the command line...

I don't know how to reset this switch - I've read a lot of articles and guides, but they all seem to assume that I would be able to type. A few articles said power it up whilst holding the spacebar (that didn't work) another suggested tapping it quickly - that didn't work either.

I've tried several different cables, different OS and different software in all sorts of combinations - I'm stuck. It appears that it's in some kind of locked mode - I've no idea how to unlock it from this locked mode.

The switch eventually leads me to (pending-AAA) login:
After it has sat there for a few minutes, it goes to
Authentication Service (AAA) on the master node is now available for login.

I have no idea how to progress past this point - any help would be appreciated!
