Summary
KVM's shadow memory management unit records a role for each shadow page describing the paging mode and permissions it was built for, and caches that role for reuse. A mismatch between the cached role and the role a shadow page actually carries causes the page to be freed while the page table hierarchy still references it. A malicious guest can drive the mismatch and then operate on the stale entries, corrupting host kernel memory from inside the virtual machine.
