VRRP Advert

Hi All,

I am getting a weird error on one of our core switches.

MSM-A: Advert for VR on VLAN CTC-Draeger, VR Id 1 ignored: received length 32, calculated length 40

It's a constant spam.

I can't find any information on the message itself.

I've checked the config for both cores that are running the VRRP for the vlan see below

BD8810 (BKUP)

create vrrp vlan CTC-Draeger vrid 1
configure vrrp vlan CTC-Draeger vrid 1 add 172.16.1.254
enable vrrp vlan CTC-Draeger vrid 1

BD10K (MSTR)

create vrrp vlan CTC-Draeger vrid 1
configure vrrp vlan CTC-Draeger vrid 1 priority 254
configure vrrp vlan CTC-Draeger vrid 1 add 172.16.1.254
enable vrrp vlan CTC-Draeger vrid 1

The IPs for the vlan itself are 172.16.1.253 and 252/24

Not sure what the issue is.

Only thing about the 8810 is that its very old, running the original blades, on code 12.4.

It's due to be replaced soon as is the 10K however this has only just started (when looking at syslog)

Any ideas?

Adding to what Martin said there could be another device sending messages to 224.0.0.18.

There can also be a version mismatch in between the switches

the "show vrrp vlan CTC-Draeger" can show what version currently being used for the VRRP messages.

"configure vrrp vlan vrid version v2"

This above command can help to hard set the version but i really doubt it would work in 12.4

I would add also that the traffic on this vlan is multicast, could this be a potential issue? the 8810 is the one complaining.

we have a mirrored setup between two other cores, both 10Ks, same size vlan, same spec devices, same traffic however no issue.

Pure guess, but could there be another device that's trying to use a vrid of 1? If its easy to do you could change the current configuration for something else and see if the message stops?
