Adding on X670G2 to an existing OSPF network

The OSPF network is a X460-24t and two cisco routers. all configured in the same area.

The fimrware of the X460 and the X670 is  16.1.2.14.

But for some reason the X670 is not learning or distribute any route.

How can I troubleshoot this ?

Hello Johan, is neighborship established ? Are area's configured right, is the mtu the same between the neighbors ? Is your license sufficient ? (some edge licenses cannot be DR/BDR).

Oscar, neighborship is established. The license is oke (core). MTU could be the issue.

Hi Johan, If neighborship is established then MTU should not be the problem. What type of route is not getting installed ? Do you have any import policies configured ?

I don't use policies. OSPF config is very basic.

configure ospf routerid <router-id>
enable ospf
enable ospf export static cost 2 type ase-type-1
configure ospf add vlan <vlanx> area 0.0.0.0


vlanx is not learned form the other neighbor and is not distibuted to the others

From the X670's perspective, check if all the subnets that needs to be advertised are all active and OSPF ready.

To export all IP vlans with ospf use command:
enable ospf export direct cost 2 type ase-type-1

Johan, 

Please check the configuration for OSPF "hello timers" and make sure they are the same for both the Extreme and Cisco.  If they are different you will not have any communications.

Hi Johan,

if OSPF adjacencies are formed, but no routes seen using the link, the problem might be a point-to-point interface configuration on only one of the routers. Since you did not specify point-to-point in the OSPF config you showed us, I would suggest you check if the Cisco is using a point-to-point interface to the Extreme X670G2.

   From your "show ospf interface" output i could see you have configured a broadcast network through the vlan "GIDAT".  

Please provide the following details for both x460 and x670 for the further debugging.

Hi Johan,
    Your output states that you have 5 routers in the OSPF broadcast domain. 192.168.178.63 is your DR and 10.2.144.254 is your BDR and all other 3 routers are DROTHER.

From my observation i could  able to see x670 is in INIT state with the DR (192.168.178.63) and because of that you are not seeing any OSPF routes.

Do the following in your 670.
 1. Ping to the ip interface of DR(RtID: 192.168.178.63) which is configured in the interface which is  connecting 670 to the DR ( i believe it is 144.2.144.251). If ping fails, resolve that. It should be the problem.

I can ping the ipaddress 144.2.144.251

When I look at the OSPF neighbors I see:

The routes are learned now. (?). Was the ping the solution ?

No Johan. Just to check the reachability i asked you to try a ping. If Ping fails, for sure OSPF will not establish its neigborship.

 If there is no issue in reachability and OSPF still stays in INIT state we could have went to the next step of debugging.

After the ping the INIT state is changed in the Full state. So it seems that the problem is spontaneously disappeared.


What would be the next step of debugging?

Hi, did you have any log messages? any errors on the link? if you have/had a L1 issue (transceiver, fiber) you might have crc errors preventing the session to be established.

From what I can read in this post, the low layer troubleshooting has not been done. Always start with it.

Hello Johan,

We could see as per t he last post 4 weeks back the OSPF init state was changed to full state already. Hence we believe there is no more issues at present. 

Let me tell you here some of the possible troubleshooting which you would always look into when this gets stuck in init state:

Kindly check for the mismatch in any of  the following:

1: router id
2: area id
3: authentication password
4: subnet mask
5: stub area flag
6:hello and dead interval time 

But as said earlier always we need to fix the layer 1 issue if any before proceeding further in to deeper analysis.

Please let us know if the suspected issue is resolved so that going forward we can wind off this long pending HUB thread communication
