I have been able to configure the ATOM to do L2VPN and it works but that is using the ethernet cable, if I do the client mode, it seems I can make the ATOM connect to an external WIFI, but it seems L2VPN stops working.
Client mode does restrict what the AP can do, since the goal for that is to extend a different network that is already configured. It won't perform other functions, like you're finding, while in client mode.
