Extreme CPU usage of HAL process : Upgrading the bootROM on Summit x440G2 ?

Hi,

Some of our X440G2 switches show high temperatures (around 90°C)

Fans seem to work. So when looking at CPU usage, I’ve noticed the HAL process has a max usage of 99,9% and a constant 20%.

After reading this article  I was wondering if the bootROM on the device should get an upgrade.

Currently, IMG version is  22.7.1-2, bootROM is 1.0.1.8

Is it good practice to do the upgrade? Where can I obtain the file?
Maybe there are other ways I should try prior to upgrading?

Thanks!

Daniël

HAL usage could be high due to different reasons:

  • high port numbers (especially if you have stack) # X770 with default config has 30% HAL CPU usage
  • bulk SNMP polls put switch into stress
  • frequent STP TC
  • MAC moves
  • etc

If you want further investigation this, please raise case in GTAC.

I’ve applied the ACL from

 https://gtacknowledge.extremenetworks.com/articles/How_To/How-to-flood-service-multicast-in-a-hardwa...

by running

configure access-list flooding.pol any

Unfortunately, HAL proces CPU usage is not affected.

Great, this I was looking for. Thanks

Link local multicast is the most often reason of the high CPU utilization by HAL.
