Temperature / fans X440-G2

Hello,
I'm trying to deploy an X440-G2 switch but I meet a problem with the equipment

When I plug in an AP 7522 for example, after 5min I have the fans racing and making a monster noise, with a temperature rising up (I only have two ports plugged in on the switch) another POE equipment causes the same thing... This is the first time I have deployed an X440 switch, has anyone ever meet this problem?
Switch faulty?
I am in version 22.7.1.2, I was able to find on the Hub similar topics but that indicated that they were fixed with a version 22.7.1.2.

Thank for your help

Sounds like this issue.....
https://gtacknowledge.extremenetworks.com/articles/Solution/Fan-Speed

  • When providing PoE to fewer than 6 devices, the fan speed on X440-G2 PoE models rises to over 15,000 RPM.
  • Upon exceeding 6 connected PoE devices, the fan speed begins to fall back to normal levels.

Thx to @Anton Sax for working together with the GTAC on this issue....

I can verify that an X440G2-48p-10G4 I have access to runs the fans quite high despite being very warm or loaded. This is on 22.5.1.7 patch 1-9, probably released before the fix was introduced to 30.3.1.6 or 22.7.x.x.

This is what I see in a normally cooled cross connect room:

a192a.1 # show temperature
Field Replaceable Units Temp (C) Status Min Normal Max
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Switch : X440G2-48p-10G4 61.50 Normal 0 10-100 110
a192a.2 # show fans

Slot-1 FanTray information:
State: Operational
NumFan: 4
Fan-1: Operational at 7680 RPM
Fan-2: Operational at 7680 RPM
Fan-3: Operational at 7680 RPM
Fan-4: Operational at 7680 RPM

Temp shows at 61.5 C and fans rather high but not crazy high. Temp is probably measured on the CPU or the exhaust and hence not showing anything near room temp. In your first post, it said 92.94 C, which would seem very off, probably because of software.

Would you say that the temp now is on par with the temp when the lines in the first post were recorded?

Incidentally, here is from an X450G2-48p's running 22.7.1.2 in a room with, say 23 C temp:

a123a.1 # show temperature
Field Replaceable Units Temp (C) Status Min Normal Max
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Switch : X450G2-48p-10G4 74.00 Normal 0 10-100 110
a123a.2 # show fans

Slot-1 FanTray information:
State: Operational
NumFan: 6
PartInfo: 1523N-43310 800560-00-03
Revision: 03
Fan-1: Operational at 3120 RPM
Fan-2: Operational at 6420 RPM
Fan-3: Operational at 3120 RPM
Fan-4: Operational at 5940 RPM
Fan-5: Operational at 3120 RPM
Fan-6: Operational at 6060 RPM

Some variation in fan speeds! It seems the individual fans keep their speed, so they don't fluctuate (more than some 20-80 rpm per fan), at least not within the few minutes I've monitored them. PoE power is 55 W right now.

Hello,

Thank you all for your feedback.
I confirm that the bug is fixed with the firmware version: 30.3.1.6.

The temperature still shows me high levels but the fans no longer make any noise.

Thank you

I had almost the same case a year ago, but it was not detected then. Would have saved me a lot of headache.
But finally with new release it should be fixed

I verified the fix is in EXOS v30.3.1 (expected today or tomorrow). It only affects X440-G2-24p-10GE4 models.
It should also be in a 22.7 patch soon (probably not Patch 1-3).
